Recently, Chinese renowned materials scientist and professor at Zhejiang University, Liu Yongfeng, passed away due to sudden illness at the age of 48.
According to a report by The Paper on March 9th, Liu Yongfeng, a sought-after professor at Zhejiang University and a doctoral supervisor, passed away on March 5th after unsuccessful medical treatment due to a sudden illness.
Public records show that Liu Yongfeng was born in 1977 and obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees from Zhejiang University. He joined the faculty of the Materials Department at Zhejiang University in 2007 and was promoted to professor in 2012. His research mainly focused on the design, synthesis, and performance regulation of hydrogen storage materials and lithium-ion battery electrode materials.
Following Liu Yongfeng’s passing, a public letter from his widow circulated online. The letter stated that on January 21st, Liu Yongfeng suffered a cerebral hemorrhage during a business trip to Xi’an for a meeting, was promptly rushed to the hospital, and passed away on March 5th due to ineffective treatment.
The public letter also mentioned that after the incident, Liu Yongfeng’s family reviewed his detailed work records from March 2024 up until the incident and found that he had worked for 319 days in the past year, with 135 days spent on business trips (some of which overlapped with workdays), and worked until 10 p.m. for 135 days. The family suspected that Liu Yongfeng’s sudden cerebral hemorrhage and death were due to overwork.
This year, there have been several reports of sudden deaths among young adults in mainland China.
On March 3rd, Li Kunpeng, known as “Brother Knife” in Zhengzhou, Henan, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 39 due to a sudden illness.
On March 2nd, Chen Rui kui, project manager of Zhongke Huawu (Dalian) Technology Innovation Service Co., Ltd., passed away at the age of 45 due to feeling unwell, with the rescue efforts being unsuccessful.
On February 25th, Chinese internet celebrity “Cat You You” passed away at the age of 24 due to illness.
In February, Liu Tingfang, former member of the Xinzhou Municipal Committee of the Shanxi Province Communist Party, and Secretary of the Political and Legal Committee, passed away at the age of 60, with the cause of death being unknown.
On February 19th, the news of the recent death of 39-year-old Guizhou Medical University Ph.D. candidate Lou Huayong caused concern. Lou Huayong’s family confirmed his death but did not disclose the specific cause.
On February 18th, well-known Tibetan singer An Duolosang from mainland China passed away at the age of 39.
On February 15th, Wu Yuyan, deputy director of the Editorial Office of the Chinese magazine “New Weekly”, passed away at the age of 41.
On February 11th, Chinese actor Gao Liang passed away at the age of 50.

On January 27th, Li Feng, senior partner at Shanghai Huali Institute and chief expert of the Free Trade Zone, as well as a researcher at the Comprehensive Research Institute of the Free Trade Zone at Nanjing University, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 48.
