Zelensky denounces China-Pakistan initiative as “destructive”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has rejected the peace proposals put forward by China and Brazil regarding the conflict in Ukraine, describing them as “destructive” and expressing dissatisfaction with Kyiv not being invited to participate in the peace process.

In an interview published on Wednesday (September 11) by the Brazilian media outlet “Metropoles,” Zelenskiy stated, “The proposals from China and Brazil are… destructive, they are just political statements.”

China and Brazil jointly called in May for an internationally recognized peace conference involving both Russia and Ukraine, allowing all parties to participate equally and fairly discuss all peace plans.

Zelenskiy questioned, “How can you present ‘this is our proposal’ without making any requests to us?”

According to video clips released by “Metropoles,” Zelenskiy mentioned that the proposal lacks respect for Ukraine and its territorial integrity, and urged Russian President Putin to take steps to demonstrate his desire to end the war.

The Ukrainian leader stated that he has initiated discussions with China and Brazil regarding these proposals.

According to a report by Reuters in June, China has been encouraging and rallying developing countries to support the “Six-Point Proposal,” which was introduced before the Swiss summit led by Ukraine that month.

Putin expressed support for China’s peace proposal in May and suggested this month that China, Brazil, and India act as mediators in potential peace negotiations on the Ukraine issue.

China’s 12-point plan put forward early in the conflict was poorly received by Ukraine, with the United States criticizing China for portraying itself as a peacemaker while also supporting Russia’s “false narratives” and refraining from condemning Russia’s invasion.

Zelenskiy’s own suggestions include: a complete withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine, the restoration of Ukraine’s borders to their pre-1991 Soviet era boundaries, and holding Russia accountable.

He mentioned that he believes the Brazilian government is “more pro-Russian,” adding, “It is necessary to remember that Russia’s love is temporary, its lack of respect for the rule of law is permanent.”

According to Voice of America, Oleksandr Chalyi, former Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine, stated at the opening of the Beijing Xiangshan Forum on Thursday that Chinese President Xi Jinping may hold face-to-face talks with Zelenskiy next month.
