Recently, a female college student at Zhaotong College in Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, is suspected to have committed suicide by drinking pesticide after experiencing campus bullying. The parents of the female student have publicly accused the school of Zhaotong College of inaction, leading to their daughter’s suicide. The parents also revealed that their daughter was bullied and forced to kneel down and apologize before her death.
On July 5, the topic of “College Student Apologized on Their Knees Before Drinking Pesticide and Passing Away” has sparked widespread attention on the mainland Chinese internet.
According to a report by Guizhou TV’s program “People’s Concern”, on the 5th of July, Mr. Yang, the parent of a female college student at Zhaotong College in Yunnan Province, disclosed that during her time as the person in charge of organizing the school’s graduation ceremony, his daughter had a dispute with a classmate over a trivial matter and was subsequently bullied. After checking her daughter’s phone, they found a video where the daughter apologized to her classmate for speaking loudly, saying “I apologize,” before kneeling down to bow.
The report mentioned that the female college student drank pesticide in a hotel on May 19th around 1 o’clock and passed away on June 20th despite rescue efforts being ineffective. The death certificate indicated that the cause of death was “pesticide poisoning and consequent respiratory circulation failure.”
Mr. Yang stated that the school acknowledged that his daughter’s suicide was a result of the conflict with her classmate during the ceremony rehearsal, but they claimed that since the student was already an adult, the school would not take responsibility.
A staff member from the publicity department of Zhaotong College told mainland media that there was absolutely no bullying situation and that the school had covered the preliminary rescue expenses; however, the parents were demanding a sky-high compensation fee of two million yuan.
In another video, the parents of the college student were seen holding their IDs to report the campus bullying and the school’s inaction at Zhaotong College, appealing to the general public for help as powerless farmers. Ms. Shen, the mother of the student, stated that her daughter was studying early childhood education at Yunnan Zhaotong College. Previously, the school arranged for her to rehearse graduation dances with students, during which she faced cold violence from her classmates. In the early hours of May 19th, she drank 100ml of pesticide. The daughter was forced to kneel and apologize, but after the incident, no school leaders came forward to console the family, and they have not shown up until now. They are requesting an explanation from the school.
