The White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday that President Trump is actively evaluating at least 15 trade agreement proposals.
“We have over 15 trade agreement proposals,” Leavitt said. “These proposals are being actively considered.”
Leavitt did not disclose which trade partners’ proposals Trump is considering or the specific contents of the proposals.
“I don’t want to announce this news before they do,” she said. “As we have been saying all along, over 75 countries have contacted us, so there is still a lot of work to be done.”
President Trump announced on April 9 that tariffs on countries that do not retaliate against the US will be suspended for 90 days to allow the US government time to reach trade agreements with these countries. However, on the same day, he increased the tariffs on China to 125%, bringing the total to 145% as China did not heed warnings and retaliated against the US.
On Monday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer held trade talks with EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic. According to meeting records seen by CNN, the talks have not made progress.
Italian Prime Minister Meloni is set to visit the White House on Thursday to meet with President Trump, seeking to ease tensions over US-EU tariffs and positioning himself as a bridge for communication between the US and the EU.
Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Besent and Trade Representative Greer will hold trade talks with a senior Japanese delegation this week. Greer stated that his meeting schedule is fully booked.
