The moment a mother sees her baby for the first time is undoubtedly the most precious and beautiful moment in her life. In order to commemorate this special moment, a gynecologist from the Dominican Republic is dedicating himself to singing songs while delivering newborns into their mothers’ arms.
Dr. Luis Manuel de Jesus told The Epoch Times, “Bringing a new life into this world is a great privilege. It gives me a profound sense of accomplishment.”
This 46-year-old doctor and his wife, Dr. Diana Figueroa, who is also a gynecologist, work at the Centro Médico GRUMED under the San Cristóbal Medical Group in the Dominican Republic. Dr. de Jesus has had a passion for singing since childhood and eventually fulfilled his desire by joining a church choir.
As his love for music grew, de Jesus began participating in various musical performances at school. “We formed a choir, and I naturally became the lead singer,” he said. “During breaks, I would try to compose songs.”
While pursuing a degree in general medicine at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, de Jesus also joined the university choir. In his final year of studies, he was a member of the choir at the Dominican-American Institute, a private English school.
As he continued to specialize in gynecology, obstetrics, and oncology, de Jesus found himself with less time to participate in rehearsals. However, his passion for singing never waned.
One day, during his first meeting with a newborn baby’s mother, he had a whimsical idea to serenade them with his beautiful voice.
“I saw how happy my patients were,” he said, adding that other patients who saw the scene on social media began requesting songs from him during their deliveries. Soon, his singing became a regular presence in the delivery room.
De Jesus understands the immense psychological stress that childbirth can bring to women. Therefore, he goes the extra mile to support his patients by singing during labor to help them feel “relaxed, calm, and happy.”
The songs he sings are sometimes requested by the mothers themselves and sometimes chosen by him for their potential to establish a beautiful connection between the mother and the baby.
For mothers of Christian faith, de Jesus sings Christian songs to comfort them. Additionally, to help patients alleviate labor pains and shorten delivery times, this doctor even dances with expectant mothers.
For de Jesus, the driving force behind going above and beyond to support his patients is his faith. “I feel God telling me, ‘Do it this way,’” he said. “When I do it, the results are always good, and I am amazed by it.”
A father of three children, de Jesus resides in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, and has always aspired to be a doctor since childhood.
“If there was an issue with animals around, I would try to handle it,” he said. “For example, if I saw a chicken with a scratched foot, I would bandage it. If there was a wound, I would try to get some aspirin. I would crush the pills, apply the powder to the wound, and it would heal faster.”
From assisting sick animals to creating a safe and comfortable birth environment for babies, Dr. de Jesus has made significant progress in his mission.
