Renowned Chinese pop singer Wang Leehom, who was previously accused of infidelity by his ex-wife Li Jinglei, made a comeback after years of silence with his new song “I’m Alive”. On April 11th, he shared a behind-the-scenes video on Weibo showing a fire breaking out while filming the music video, with his face appearing to be covered in soot and a piano burnt to ashes, creating a shocking scene that sparked discussions.
In the video posted on Weibo on the 11th, Wang Leehom exclaimed, “My piano really got burnt.” According to him, the scene of the piano burning was not a special effect but an actual ignition for real effects, which unfortunately escalated beyond control, resulting in the complete destruction of the piano and Wang Leehom’s face getting blackened by the fire. The heart-wrenching images left a strong impact on viewers.
In the video, Wang Leehom expressed, “I’m not heartbroken over my face, but over this piano, which has turned into ashes. It used to be a real piano, now it’s burnt like this.” The Weibo video, tagged with “published in Taiwan, China,” showcased Wang Leehom calling on his fans to share their thoughts after watching the video, asking if burning down the piano was worth it, aiming to engage with them on the impact of the fiery scene.
However, the behind-the-scenes video resulted in mixed reactions. Some fans praised his musical contributions and anticipated his metaphorical phoenix-like resurgence while expressing concerns for his well-being. On the other hand, some netizens criticized the lack of artistic value in the act, branding it as sheer wastefulness and unnecessary, with opinions suggesting that Wang Leehom sharing a self-portrait with a burnt face was merely a publicity stunt.
In response to the criticism from netizens, Wang Leehom’s management company swiftly clarified that the claims of “burning down million-dollar antiques” and “facial burns on Wang Leehom” were entirely unfounded. They stressed that the entire filming process strictly adhered to safety regulations, with the presence of professional firefighting teams and medical personnel on set, ensuring no injuries occurred during the shoot.
Public records indicate that Wang Leehom, born in the United States in 1976, holds citizenship of the United States and the Republic of China (Taiwan). Besides being a prominent male pop singer in the Chinese-speaking music scene, he is also known for his work as a musician, actor, and director, with notable pieces like “Big City, Small Love” and “Only You,” as well as his self-directed romantic film “Love Announcement”.
Towards the end of 2021, Wang Leehom faced allegations of infidelity from his ex-wife Li Jinglei, leading to the dissolution of their 8-year marriage. Due to Wang Leehom’s participation in various propaganda performances for the Chinese Communist Party and singing themed songs for CCP ideological campaigns, the scandal caused an immediate backlash, resulting in his swift censorship by Chinese official authorities. At that time, many internet users jokingly commented that “Wang Leehom is completely done for.” Even Hu Xijin, the former editor-in-chief of Global Times who recently announced his retirement, stated that unless Wang Leehom could provide evidence to reverse the situation, “his once prominent position in the Chinese entertainment market is essentially over.”
