Wang Dalu’s 5 Works in Jeopardy Due to Alleged Attempted Murder Case

In recent years, Taiwanese artist Wang Dalu, who has risen to stardom in China, has recently become embroiled in a case of alleged “attempted murder” in Taiwan. The news of this incident has reached China, sparking public outcry and calls for a boycott. According to reports from mainland media, if Wang Dalu is officially classified as a “disgraced artist” by the Chinese Communist Party, he may face a complete ban in China. Currently, he has 5 projects awaiting release, and they may be at risk of being unable to premiere.

Wang Dalu has been surrounded by controversies recently. First, there were reports of suspected forgery of medical certificates to evade military service. Most recently, he was involved in a violent incident, accused of brutally assaulting a driver, leading to his prosecution on March 4th for alleged “attempted murder”. Despite his abundant entertainment resources in mainland China, he has 5 projects in which he stars or participates awaiting release, including films such as “Unforgivable” and “Joyful Belly”, as well as TV series like “Creed”, “The House of Luck”, and “Living Quietly in an Anxious World”.

Analyses from mainland media suggest that if Wang Dalu is included in the Chinese official list of “disgraced artists”, these projects may either face difficulties in airing or require significant financial investment to reshoot with a replacement, resulting in severe losses for the production companies.

Following the news about “Wang Dalu being investigated for attempted murder”, the topic quickly became a trending discussion on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

In fact, the State Administration of Radio and Television of the People’s Republic of China issued a notice in 2014 regarding the “blacklisting of disgraced artists”, stating that those involved in illegal activities such as drug abuse, prostitution, and scandalous behavior would face being blacklisted. The notice clearly stipulates that artists who cause negative social impacts due to their illegal behavior will face restrictions on program broadcasts.

As reported previously, this “notice” has been further expanded until 2021, including the inability to release completed works and affecting other actors in the same production. A similar case involves Zhao Wei being listed as a “disgraced artist” in 2021, leading to all her works being removed from Chinese streaming platforms and her information being deleted from Baidu Baike. Additionally, Zhao Wei’s account on Weibo was shut down, and the drama series “Battle of the Roses” she was working on with Huang Xiaoming at that time was immediately suspended and subsequently recast with other actors.
