Several United States federal congressmen have written to the newly appointed U.S. Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, requesting her to promptly release a report on the corruption and hidden wealth of senior Chinese Communist Party officials. The potential release of this report could have an unprecedented impact on the Chinese Communist regime.
On Wednesday, February 26, Republican federal congressman Andy Ogles and three other congressmen sent a letter to Gabbard urging her to release the said report as soon as possible. The lawmakers stated that according to federal law passed in 2022, U.S. intelligence agencies were supposed to provide this report over a year ago.
According to information quoted by The Washington Times, the congressmen wrote in the letter, “It is customary for Congress to request reports from federal agencies, but the final release of this report will have a more profound impact. This could expose that Xi Jinping and senior CCP officials are not merely ‘scraping by’ on statutory salaries but are likely bona fide billionaires.”
The congressmen criticized Avril Haines, former Director of National Intelligence under the Biden administration, for evading congressional inquiries about the report multiple times.
“The final deadline for submitting the report has passed by 14 months, and Congress is still awaiting this report crucial for our legislative work,” the lawmakers stated in the letter.
Republican Congressman Chris Smith from New Jersey, Republican Congressman Barry Moore from Alabama, and Republican Congressman Andy Biggs from Arizona also signed this joint letter.
Gabbard officially took office on February 12, and her spokesperson did not immediately comment on the matter.
Last summer, the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. lobbied against the release of this report to the U.S. government.
However, a report by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) released in June 2024 indicated that senior Chinese Communist Party leaders, including Xi Jinping, were involved in corruption and had hidden hundreds of millions of dollars in wealth through their relatives.
The congressmen pointed out in the letter that the accumulation of “vast wealth” by senior CCP officials is well known. For instance, in 2012, it was revealed that Xi Jinping’s family held shares in a company worth $376 million and indirectly owned 18% of shares in a rare earth mining company, with total assets of $1.73 billion.
In contrast, approximately 600 million people in China live on a daily budget of only $5. Amid the current economic downturn in China, Xi Jinping has instructed the Chinese people to “endure hardships.”
The letter stated, “The luxurious lifestyle of the CCP leadership stands in stark contrast to the suffering of the 1.4 billion Chinese people under authoritarian rule, which will completely shatter the illusion promoted by Xi Jinping and his cronies of being ‘anti-corruption’.”
They also demanded that Gabbard provide a detailed progress report on the release of the mentioned report by March 12.
