In response to the joint statement released during the US-Japan summit, reaffirming the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, the Presidential Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) expressed sincere gratitude.
The summit between US President Trump (Trump) and Japanese Prime Minister Shinsuke Abe was held in Washington, D.C. on the 7th local time. In the joint statement issued after the meeting, it reiterated that maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is indispensable for the security and prosperity of the international community. It encouraged peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues, opposed any unilateral actions to change the status quo through force or coercion, and expressed support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations.
The joint statement also strongly opposed the Chinese Communist Party’s challenges to the current situation in the East China Sea by force or coercion, as well as its illegal claims, militarization, and various provocative actions in the South China Sea. The leaders of the US and Japan reaffirmed their firm stance on maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, emphasizing opposition to any unilateral actions to change the status quo through force or coercion in this historic meeting.
The spokesperson for the Presidential Office, Kuo Yahuai, stated today that the actions taken by the two leaders demonstrate their steadfast support for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and Taiwan’s participation in international affairs. The Presidential Office expressed sincere gratitude.
Kuo Yahuai pointed out the significance of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, which has become a high consensus internationally. As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan is capable and willing to cooperate with the international community. Taiwan will continue to enhance its self-defense capabilities, deepen trilateral security partnerships with the US and Japan, and cooperate with like-minded countries to uphold the rules-based international order, ensuring the freedom and openness of the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region, as well as global peace, stability, and prosperity, contributing positively to the world.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China expressed sincere gratitude and appreciation, stating, “We welcome the continued attention of the international community to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and initiatives to address the threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party to the peaceful status quo. As a responsible member of the international community, our country will actively implement the ‘Four Pillars of Peace’ action plan, continuously work to enhance our self-defense capabilities, and cooperate with like-minded partners such as the US and Japan to ensure peace, stability, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.”
Additionally, 24 Republican members of the US House of Representatives have put forth a resolution urging the US government to abolish the outdated One China policy, restore formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and negotiate a bilateral free trade agreement with Taiwan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China expressed gratitude for the steadfast support of the US Congress for Taiwan and strengthening Taiwan-US relations. The ministry will continue to monitor developments in the new session of the US Congress and maintain close contact with friends in the US Congress and the executive branch to steadily deepen the global partnership between Taiwan and the US.
