Several U.S. embassies in various countries have issued a reminder that even visa applicants with valid documents may be denied entry into the United States. Foreign individuals who advocate extremist ideologies or carry terrorist propaganda materials should be particularly cautious.
Since taking office on January 20th, U.S. President Trump has tightened the screening process for green card holders, international students, and individuals holding H-1B visas.
According to Reuters, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Thursday (March 27) that the State Department may have canceled over 300 visas after detaining and revoking the visa of a Turkish student at Tufts University earlier this week.
On Tuesday evening, Turkish student Rumeysa Ozturk was detained by Homeland Security enforcement officers in Somerville, Massachusetts, and her F-1 visa was canceled.
Ozturk had participated in anti-Semitic demonstrations. The Department of Homeland Security deemed her to be “engaged in supporting Hamas activities” and emphasized that visas are privileges, not fundamental rights.
Rubio mentioned that if students engage in actions such as “disrupting universities, harassing students, occupying buildings, or inciting riots,” Washington will revoke any previously issued visas.
In early March, Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil was also detained and had his green card revoked due to his support for Islamic extremism.
Hilton Beckham, Assistant Commissioner of Public Affairs at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, previously stated, “Foreign individuals who advocate extremist ideologies or carry terrorist propaganda materials are not allowed to enter the United States. Visas do not guarantee entry; after rigorous security checks, the CBP holds the final decision.”
Several countries with U.S. embassies have used social media to remind their citizens of precautions to take when traveling to the United States.
The U.S. Embassy in Tallinn, Estonia, quoted a message from U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem on their Facebook page.
In the video, Noem said, “When you apply to enter the U.S. and obtain a visa, you are a guest. Now, if you come to this country and promote Hamas, promote terrorist organizations, engage in disruptive behavior, participate in rebellion, and campus riots, if we know this, we will never let you in. You have deceived us. You are being deported.”
The U.S. Embassy in Budapest, Hungary also stated, “We do not want anyone in our country committing crimes, disrupting our national security, or public safety.”
