This week, two winter storms are set to hit the United States, bringing snow, freezing rain, and bitter cold to parts of the country, especially the Midwest and the East Coast.
Following a series of storms over the past few weeks, the first storm of the week is forecasted to form in the Plains region, sweeping across the Midwest on Monday, February 10th. States like Oklahoma and Arkansas will experience rain and light icing. Subsequently, an ice and snow storm is expected to hit the Ohio River Valley and the East Coast from Virginia to New England, lasting through Tuesday.
On Tuesday, moderate snow is predicted from Kentucky to Maryland. The heaviest snowfall is projected in the Mid-Atlantic region, with amounts possibly reaching 3 to 6 inches. Some areas could even see up to 8 inches of snow. Washington D.C. and Baltimore are expected to receive 4 to 6 inches of snow, while Philadelphia may get 2 to 3 inches and New York City around 1 inch.
By Tuesday and Wednesday, the southern side of this storm system may bring heavy rain to the southern United States, with rainfall amounts reaching 1 to 3 inches, and locally higher amounts, potentially lasting until Thursday. AccuWeather, a U.S. private media company that provides commercial weather forecasting services, indicates that a steady rain band might develop in the Mississippi River Valley and along the Gulf Coast, with the highest rainfall anticipated in eastern Texas, northern Louisiana, central Mississippi, and Alabama.
According to AccuWeather forecasts, more northern areas may face significant ice and snow impacts.
In this storm, Arctic cold air will bring temperatures 25 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit below average to the northern Rockies and northern High Plains regions.
The second storm is expected to nearly merge with the first storm, starting with light snow in Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas on Tuesday night. By Wednesday, moderate to heavy snow is likely from Kansas to Michigan, with regions like Kansas City, Missouri, Des Moines, Iowa, and other major cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee, and Detroit possibly seeing snow accumulation.
On Thursday, the storm is forecasted to bring snow to the northern parts of New England and rain along Interstate 95 from Boston to Raleigh, North Carolina.
By Thursday, a narrow band in Florida, southern Alabama, southern Georgia, and the coastal areas of South Carolina may experience some severe thunderstorms or intense storms.
