On Friday evening, a shooting incident occurred in Newark, New Jersey, resulting in two police officers being injured. Both individuals are members of the Newark Police Department according to official sources.
One of the officers sustained serious injuries, as reported by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. The two injured officers were taken to University Hospital in Newark for treatment.
The shooting took place after 6:30 PM local time near the intersection of Broadway and Carteret Street. Several hours later, the area remained cordoned off.
The specific circumstances surrounding the shooting and the cause of the incident are still unclear at the moment, as officials have not disclosed whether any suspects have been arrested. The Prosecutor’s Office stated that the investigation is still “actively ongoing.”
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy posted on X platform, stating, “Earlier tonight, an incident occurred in Newark where two officers were shot. I have received the latest reports on the incident.”
“The situation is developing rapidly. Please keep these officers, their families, and all law enforcement officers who selflessly risk their lives to keep us safe in your prayers,” he wrote.
New Jersey Attorney General, Matthew J. Platkin, said in a statement, “My office is closely monitoring the tragic shooting incident that occurred in Newark tonight.”
“To protect our community, our law enforcement officers face danger every day, and tonight’s events painfully remind us of the immense sacrifices they make. Please keep the Newark Police Department and the families of the injured officers in your thoughts, and pray for the two officers who were shot while on duty,” he said.
