Former Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz withdrew from his nomination as Attorney General in President Trump’s administration on Thursday, November 21st. That evening, Trump announced on X platform that he was nominating Pam Bondi, former Florida Attorney General, to be the next U.S. Attorney General.
In his post on X platform, Trump wrote, “I am honored to announce that Pam Bondi, former Attorney General of Florida, will be the next U.S. Attorney General. Pam has been a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, she has been tough on violent criminals and has brought street safety to Florida families. As the first female Attorney General of Florida, she fought to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs and reduce the tragedies of fentanyl overdoses, which have devastated many families in our country. Her work has been outstanding, and during my first term, I asked her to join our Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission, where we saved many lives!
“For a long time, the partisan struggle within the Department of Justice has been a weapon against me and other Republicans, but that will end now. Pam will refocus the Department of Justice on combating crime and achieving the goal of ‘Making America Safe Again.’ I have known Pam for many years, she is intelligent, strong, and a fighter for ‘America First.’ She will excel as Attorney General!”
Bondi, 59, is an American lawyer, lobbyist, and Republican politician who served as the 37th Attorney General of Florida from 2011 to 2019, becoming the first female Attorney General in Florida.
She is a long-term ally of President Trump. During Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2020, she was one of his defense lawyers. In 2024, she led the legal department of the America First Policy Institute, an organization allied with Trump.
