Trump: Possible New Trade Agreement Between US and China

On February 20, 2025, US President Trump (Trump) stated on Wednesday, February 19, that a new trade agreement between the US and China could be reached in the near future. He also mentioned that Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping will visit the US, but did not provide a specific timeline.

Trump, aboard the US presidential plane “Air Force One,” told reporters that the US had reached a “great trade agreement” with China in 2020, and that there is a possibility of a new agreement.

It is believed that the dialogue or interaction between Trump and Xi Jinping may determine whether the US government will relax or postpone trade tariff measures.

When asked about visits by other world leaders to the US, Trump said, “Eventually, we will invite Chairman Xi, we will invite everyone to come (to the US).”

Xi Jinping’s last visit to the US was in November 2023, where he held a summit with then US President Biden, reaching agreements on resuming military exchanges and curbing fentanyl production.

Before officially taking office as US President on January 20, Trump also had discussions with Xi Jinping on issues including TikTok, trade, and Taiwan.

On Wednesday, Trump told reporters that he is currently negotiating with the Chinese side regarding issues with TikTok, and the US hopes to facilitate the sale of this popular application.

Last week, Trump mentioned having conversations with Xi Jinping after taking office, but did not disclose the specifics of their discussions.

The tension between the US and China has persisted for many years, involving issues such as trade tariffs, cybersecurity, TikTok, Taiwan, Hong Kong, human rights, and the origin of the COVID-19 virus.

Trump also informed reporters that he believes an agreement can be reached with Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

“We can reach an agreement with Russia to stop the killing,” Trump said. He added that he believes Russia also wishes to end the conflict.
