Former US President and Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump, survived his second assassination attempt recently. In the wake of this incident, President Joe Biden called for increased support for the US Secret Service on Monday, September 16.
Biden addressed reporters, emphasizing the need for additional assistance to the Secret Service. He stated, “One thing I want to make clear is that the Secret Service needs more help. I believe Congress should respond to their needs.”
When asked what kind of help the Secret Service might require, Biden replied, “They can determine whether they need more manpower.”
Biden’s comments came following the second unsuccessful attempt on Trump’s life. On Sunday, near the Mar-a-Lago estate in West Palm Beach, Florida, the Secret Service swiftly responded to a threat at the Trump International Golf Club, apprehending an armed assailant and ensuring Trump’s safety as he was golfing at the time.
The FBI has initiated an investigation into the incident, while Florida authorities have launched their own inquiries.
Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, expressed in an interview with Fox & Friends on Fox News that the House will push for enhanced protection for Trump, including providing additional resources when necessary. However, Johnson cautioned that he believes it may not solely be a “funding issue.”
Johnson emphasized, “President Trump is the most in need of protection. He faces the most attacks and the greatest threats.”
He attributed the security challenges facing Trump under the Secret Service to “personnel allocation” issues.
Compared to the protection he received while in office, Trump’s current Secret Service protection is notably limited, posing added difficulties for the agency in safeguarding him.
