American billionaire Elon Musk’s post of a chart has unexpectedly drawn attention. The chart shows a significant increase in the number of social security numbers (SSNs) being applied for by non-citizens in the United States.
Wisconsin is set to have its state Supreme Court election on Tuesday (April 1st), and Musk attended a city hall meeting in the state on Sunday (March 30th), where he not only handed out million-dollar prize checks to two voters but also showcased a chart displaying the sharp rise in the number of SSNs being applied for by non-citizens.
Musk mentioned that some shocking findings were discovered in the U.S. social security database.
“We found 20 million deceased individuals marked as alive in the social security system,” Musk said. “It’s insane.”
Furthermore, in 2024, the U.S. issued social security numbers to 2.1 million foreign individuals.
Antonio Gracias, a member of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by Musk, involved in assessing social security program audits, stated that they found an exponential increase in the approval of SSNs for non-citizens over the past few years.
“In 2021, 270,000 SSNs were issued to foreign individuals,” he said. “Now in 2024, this number has skyrocketed to 2.1 million.”
Both Musk and Gracias emphasized that their conclusions were not politically motivated.
“This is not political,” Gracias asserted. He expressed his support for legal immigration, citing that he also has foreign-born relatives.
“It’s about America and its future,” he added.
Gracias believed that the government had issued SSNs to illegal immigrants crossing the U.S. border without rigorous verification.
He pointed out that their team uncovered non-citizens who had been registered to vote, with some confirmed to have cast ballots.
“We conducted sampling surveys, checked voter registration records, and found individuals in this group who had registered and voted. We have filed some cases for prosecution,” he said.
Musk’s team’s discovery sparked varied responses on social media, with some expressing support while others raised doubts.
“You must show people the evidence in this regard. Otherwise, it will only further divide the public,” one user stated.
“If there is evidence, it should be handed over to the FBI Director and the Attorney General for investigation and prosecution,” another added.
Due to Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency advocating for massive government layoffs, it has stirred strong emotions towards Musk himself and his managed enterprises, leading to a drop in the stock price of his electric car company.
Musk also addressed this pressure during the event. “They are trying to put immense pressure on me, and I guess on Tesla too, to stop doing this. My Tesla stock and the stock of almost everyone holding Tesla has almost halved. I mean, that’s not a small matter.”
As of Monday, Tesla’s stock price has dropped by over 34% year-to-date, nearly half from its peak in December last year.
