Thief Hides in Brooklyn Macy’s, Attempts to Steal Jewelry, Alert Employee Stops Him

New York City’s police department (NYPD) reported that a thief attempted to steal jewelry worth about $1.5 million from Macy’s at the downtown Brooklyn center, but was stopped by an alert employee while trying to escape, ultimately failing to succeed.

According to police investigation, the suspect entered Macy’s on Fulton Street during the day this past Monday (10th) and stayed inside the store during business hours. After the store closed at 9 p.m., he continued to hide inside until about an hour later, when he started his operation. He packed 753 pieces of jewelry into several suitcases, attempting to take away this batch of merchandise worth about $1.5 million.

However, as he was preparing to leave, a store employee noticed and immediately confronted him, forcing the suspect to drop the suitcase of jewelry and run away, ultimately empty-handed. Police stated that the incident did not cause any injuries.

Police have released surveillance footage, showing the suspect wearing a black hoodie, black mask, and a black Nike cap at the time, and urged the public to provide any leads to help track down this individual.

Due to plans to close 150 underperforming stores, the Macy’s location on Fulton Street in Brooklyn is set to close down.

Additionally, police data shows that as of February 9th, theft cases in the jurisdiction of the NYPD’s 84th Precinct in New York City (including Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Vinegar Hill, and downtown Brooklyn) have increased by 35% compared to the same period last year, rising from 20 incidents last year to 27. Police are urging businesses and residents to heighten their awareness and work together to prevent crimes.
