Taiwan’s Meteorological Agency: Cold Front to Bring Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms, and Strong Gusts

The Taiwan Central Weather Bureau stated that today (4th), due to the passage of a cold front, there is a high chance of short-duration heavy rainfall in the northern part of Taichung and Taitung areas. There is a possibility of localized heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong gusts of wind. People are advised to be cautious of lightning and strong winds, to prevent flooding in low-lying areas, and to be vigilant against landslides and falling rocks in mountainous areas.

The warm spring days in Taiwan are temporarily coming to an end as the cold front passes gradually from the night of the 3rd to the morning of the 5th. Showers and thunderstorms are expected in various regions, with particular attention to the western half and areas like Yilan and Hualien where localized heavy rain is likely to occur. Near the cold front, the atmospheric environment is unstable, leading to the possibility of intense convective activity, accompanied by short-duration heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong gusts of wind, and even hail. It is recommended to pay close attention to weather changes when going out and carry an umbrella.

As the cold front continues to move through from the night of the 3rd to the morning of the 5th, showers and thunderstorms are expected in various regions, with a focus on the western half and areas like Yilan and Hualien where localized heavy rain is likely to occur. The unstable atmospheric conditions near the cold front may lead to vigorous convective activity, resulting in intense weather conditions such as short-duration heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong gusts of wind, and possibly hail. It is important to stay informed about weather changes and be prepared with rain gear for outdoor activities.

Starting from the daytime on the 5th, the strengthening of the northeasterly monsoon wind and the eastward movement of the cloud and rain area in southern China will gradually lower temperatures, bringing damp and cool weather to Taiwan. Rainfall is expected in various parts of Taiwan, particularly in the central to northern regions as well as Yilan and Hualien where the range of precipitation will be wider. From the 6th, a cold air mass from the mainland will move southward, and from the 7th to the 9th morning, Taiwan will experience the influence of the cold air mass from the mainland, coupled with the continuation of the cloud and rain area in southern China, leading to wet and cold conditions. Rain showers are expected in central to northern regions as well as Yilan and Hualien, while the southern region and Taitung may experience localized rainfall.

“If temperature and moisture conditions are right,” the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau mentioned that there is a chance of sporadic snowfall above 3,500 meters in elevation in the central to northern high mountains during the early mornings of the 7th and 8th. As moisture decreases from the 8th onwards, rain showers will occur on windward slopes, with occasional rain in areas north of Taoyuan, located in the eastern half, remaining cool and cold during the day. South of Hsinchu will experience increasing clouds turning to partly cloudy to clear skies, with daytime temperatures slightly rising. Temperatures will continue to be cool in the mornings and evenings across various regions.

The Taiwan Central Weather Bureau stated that from the daytime of the 9th onwards, the cold air mass from the mainland will weaken. Temperatures will rise across different regions, with significant day-to-night temperature differences in the central and southern parts. Occasional rain showers are expected only in the Keelung North Coast area, Greater Taipei, and the eastern half, while the remaining regions will have partly cloudy to clear skies.

Furthermore, the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau reminded that from the 4th to the 5th, the Keelung North Coast area and the eastern coastal areas (including Orchid Island and Green Island) are prone to long waves. From the night of the 4th to the 9th, coastal areas will experience strong winds and rough seas, with open and uninhabited coastal areas from Taoyuan to Tainan and the southeastern regions, Kenting Peninsula, and various outlying islands (Orchid Island, Green Island, Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu) likely to encounter strong gusts up to 9 to 10 Beaufort scale winds, with waves reaching heights of about 3 to 4 meters.

The Taiwan Central Weather Bureau emphasized that the recent marine conditions are poor, and thus, coastal activities and maritime operations should exercise caution for safety. As we transition into the spring season, weather changes rapidly, so it is crucial for everyone to stay informed with the latest weather information provided by the Meteorological Bureau.
