On the early morning of January 21st, a Richter scale 6.4 earthquake struck Dabu Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan, with tremors felt throughout the entire island and triggering a national alert.
According to data from the Central Weather Bureau’s Earthquake Monitoring Center in Taiwan, the earthquake occurred at 12:17 am on January 21st, with its epicenter located 37.9 kilometers southeast of the Chiayi County government, at a depth of 9.7 kilometers, classified as an extremely shallow earthquake.
Based on the bureau’s data, areas experiencing level 4 intensity include Chiayi City, Yunlin County, Taitung County, Nantou County, Pingtung County, Hualien County, Changhua County, Taichung City, and Penghu County. Level 3 intensity was reported in Miaoli County, Yilan County, and Hsinchu County, while areas with level 2 intensity include Hsinchu City, Taoyuan City, New Taipei City, and Taipei City. Keelung City and Lienchiang County were listed as areas with level 1 intensity.
The Central Weather Bureau has issued alerts for 20 counties and cities, with specific seismic intensity levels in each location pending further reports from the bureau.
