I. Taiwan Fears No Intimidation: Democracy and Freedom are the Beacon Safeguarding Regional Peace
President Lai, on March 13th during a high-level national security meeting, publicly designated China as a “foreign hostile force” for the first time. Beijing reacted fiercely, with China Central Radio and Television threatening to “punish Taiwan independence,” state media People’s Daily intimidating with phrases like “smashed to pieces,” and the Taiwan Affairs Office issuing “four principles” as threats. They even brought up the 20-year-old “Anti-Secession Law” to intimidate Taiwan. However, such bellicose rhetoric is merely a revival of the Mao-era “class struggle,” with the true purpose of using intimidation tactics to cover up the reality of China’s economic downturn and intense power struggles within its officialdom. The people of Taiwan need not panic or fear; on the contrary, we have more reason to stand tall with confidence.
Taiwan has never actively provoked China despite facing long-term verbal and military intimidation. President Lai’s “5 major national security threats” and “17 response strategies” aim to make Taiwan a beacon of Indo-Pacific peace visible to the entire world.
Taiwan’s democracy is certainly not the fuse for regional conflict. Yet, the Beijing authorities distort facts, falsely claiming that Taiwan is the “peace destroyer” across the strait. But the question is: who is the real “troublemaker”?

In recent years, Chinese cyber armies have repeatedly launched hacking attacks against our important institutions and infrastructure, used money to buy off traitors endangering national security, frequently violated our airspace with military aircraft and drones, and various vessels including coast guard ships, research vessels, and oceanographic survey ships have regularly intruded into restricted waters around our outer islands without justification. Such bullying behavior and gray-zone harassment not only violate international law but also run counter to the universal values of freedom and human rights. These actions fully meet the definition and constituent elements of our “Anti-Infiltration Act,” proving that China is the external force attempting to subvert Taiwan’s democracy. We do not actively initiate conflict, but we will not bow to threats. Protecting our free and democratic homeland is our national will and the consensus of the Taiwanese people. Supporting Taiwan means supporting the free values we all share.
II. Exposing the CCP’s Lies: “Integrated Development” is a Sugar-Coated Poison Pill for Annexing Taiwan
The Beijing authorities criticize President Lai for “escalating confrontation,” yet shamelessly claim that “integrated development” can build a bridge of peace across the strait! The so-called “integrated development” is nothing but a united front trap disguised as economic and cultural cooperation. From issuing “Chinese ID cards” to luring representatives, internet celebrities, businesses, professors, university students, artists, temples, and athletes to visit China for exchanges and development, they are gradually realizing their ambition to annex Taiwan through a strategy of “swimming like a duck” and “boiling the frog slowly.” Look at those Taiwanese businesses that have been “raised, trapped, and killed” – from initial subsidies and preferential treatment to later asset freezes, and even unreasonable deprivation of personal freedom to return to Taiwan. This clearly shows that this is not “integrated development” but “enslavement and fraud”!

Among President Lai’s 17 strategies, he specifically points out the dangers of the “integrated development temptation” and protects our military and society by restoring the military trial system and strengthening anti-infiltration measures. This is not the “green terror” hyped by China, but our necessary means to guard our national gates. We have our own constitution, elections, and freedoms – this is the way of life chosen by 23 million people. We sincerely welcome genuine equal exchanges but absolutely reject trading national sovereignty for economic benefits.
Taiwan’s technological strength and economic resilience are evident to all. They are the foundation of our independence in the world and the real threat that makes Beijing fearful and anxious. We believe that our people have clear eyes, and China’s sugar-coated poison cannot blur our national identity.
III. Restarting Military Trials is Not a Regression of Democracy, but Progress in Security
Some worry that restoring military trials is “turning back the clock of history” and infringing on freedom. However, last year (113) saw 43 cases of Chinese espionage being prosecuted, indicating that China’s infiltration of our military and intelligence agencies is increasingly rampant. These traitors spread disinformation, steal and leak secrets, seriously undermining our national foundation. If we don’t plug these holes in time and continue to have ordinary courts handle these cases, wouldn’t we be allowing the enemy to invade our doors? Therefore, the restart of military trials is not meant to suppress speech but to reasonably construct a steel defense line under relevant supporting measures to precisely strike at Chinese spy infiltration, while allowing our professional military judges to focus on handling cases involving active military personnel involved in treason, leaking secrets, and other threats to national security.

Internationally, the United States has long implemented a military trial system and continues to deepen military cooperation with Taiwan. When our military and intelligence agencies are no longer infiltrated, the United States and its allies will trust Taiwan more, and international cooperation on advanced weapons will be better guaranteed. Taiwan is not fighting alone but is responding to the Chinese threat together with the free world. Therefore, restoring military trials is a key step in eliminating traitors internally and demonstrating determination externally.
IV. Freedom Does Not Equal Indulgence: Protecting Democracy Requires Unity of All People
Recently, a Chinese-Taiwanese couple who are internet celebrities had their residence permits canceled for advocating “armed unification,” leading some to question whether this violates or deprives them of freedom of speech. Let’s clarify one point: freedom has never been unlimited indulgence, and it cannot become a tool for enemies to destroy Taiwan’s democracy. When someone publicly advocates for the forceful annexation of Taiwan, threatening our right to survival, this clearly crosses the red line of free speech and becomes a national security crisis. Consider this: how would American courts judge someone who incites and instigates terrorist attacks in the United States? Therefore, our government’s relevant investigation measures are not dictatorial but legally defend the safety and freedom of 23 million people, protecting society from malicious incitement.

In addition, President Lai’s 17 strategies also include enhancing media literacy and promoting civic education to help all citizens recognize China’s information warfare and cognitive operations. We are not afraid of criticism of the government, but we must be highly vigilant against those Beijing spokespersons, fellow travelers, and mouthpieces disguised under the cloak of freedom. Taiwan’s diversity and openness are achievements we are proud of, but these achievements require military and civilian unity, using rationality and solidarity to jointly resist Chinese infiltration, ensuring that the light of Taiwan’s democracy never goes out.
V. The World Hears Taiwan: We Are Armored Hedgehogs, Not Lambs Awaiting Slaughter
Beijing threatens that “Taiwan independence means war,” but Taiwan has never sought war, only the dignity of survival. President Lai’s designation of China as a “foreign hostile force” is not provocation but facing reality, while clearly stating to the world: Taiwan is an armored hedgehog, not a lamb awaiting slaughter. The G7 issued a joint statement on March 14, supporting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, opposing unilateral changes to the status quo by force, and affirming Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. This is the international community’s public recognition of Taiwan’s will and a warning to Chinese hegemony.

President Lai’s 17 strategies are not just defensive but also proactive: from economic security to total mobilization, from restoring military trials to blocking united front infiltration, from ally cooperation to strengthening civil defense awareness, we are declaring our determination against annexation to the whole world. This is a major turning point for Taiwan, shifting from passive defense to active offense. Taiwan is not a chess piece on an isolated island but the master of its own destiny.
China is deliberately dividing Taiwan, creating opposition and panic, but we are replacing division with unity and shocking the world with action. The 17 strategies are not just the government’s business but the responsibility of all citizens. From identifying fake news to supporting national defense construction, everyone can contribute. Our future should be written by ourselves, and no hostile force can shake the will of this land!
