Taiwanese Expert: Rainy on 4/1, Mostly Fair and Partly Cloudy for the First 2 Days of the Qingming Festival

Weather experts indicate that today (March 31) and tomorrow (April 1) will be rainy in Taiwan, but the weather will improve starting from April 2. The first two days of the Qingming Festival holiday (April 3 and 4) are forecasted to be mostly sunny with some clouds in various parts of the island.

Associate Professor Wu Derong, from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University in Taiwan, mentioned in the “Weather Classroom” column of the Meteorological Application Promotion Foundation today that the latest European model (ECMWF) simulations from the evening of March 30 show that a cloud system in southern China will continue to move eastward today, bringing noticeable rainfall to the central and northern regions of Taiwan. The southern areas may experience occasional light rain. Due to the influence of a “continental cold air mass,” northern Taiwan will be damp and cold, while other areas will be cool in the mornings and evenings.

According to Wu Derong, the latest European model simulations indicate that starting from April 1, the range of rainfall will gradually reduce during the day. Some brief showers may still occur in the northern and eastern parts of the country, with a slight increase in temperatures as the cold air weakens. Northern Taiwan will remain damp and cool. The weather will further improve on April 2, with clear and stable conditions in northern and central-southern Taiwan. Daytime temperatures will noticeably rise, with a chance of localized brief showers in the eastern regions. The mornings and evenings will remain cool across the island.

Wu Derong mentioned that the latest European model simulations predict stable weather during the first two days of the Qingming Festival (April 3 and 4), with mostly clear skies and some clouds in different areas. Temperatures are expected to gradually increase, ranging from comfortable in the north to slightly warm in the south, with cool mornings and evenings. The last two days of the Qingming Festival (April 5 and 6) may see the passage of a shortwave accompanied by a cloud system moving eastward from southern China. The intensity of these weather patterns is expected to be weak, bringing minor changes and an increase in cloud cover across the island.

The Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan issued a special report on low temperatures today due to the influence of a continental cold air mass. The northern, northeastern, and eastern regions will experience cold weather, while other areas will also have cool mornings and evenings. In particular, there is a probability of temperatures around or below 10 degrees Celsius persisting in certain areas of Kinmen County and Lienchiang County from early morning to daytime (indicated by an orange warning light); New Taipei City may also experience temperatures below 10 degrees (indicated by a yellow warning light).

The Central Weather Bureau also issued a heavy rain warning due to the impact of the northeast wind and the eastward movement of the cloud and rain region in southern China. Today, there is a possibility of local heavy rain occurring in the northern coastal areas of Keelung, Yilan, Nantou, and the mountainous areas of Hualien, so people should be cautious of sudden heavy rainfall and be prepared for potential landslides and falling rocks in the mountainous regions.
