Recently, in a heartwarming incident at Newark Airport in New Jersey, a backpack containing valuable items such as diamond jewelry was mistakenly given to a Brooklyn exchange student returning home for a Jewish holiday. This good deed unfolded as the backpack was promptly returned to its rightful owner by the student who found it.
The 20-year-old student, who wishes to remain anonymous, recalled how a yellow taxi driver returned the backpack to him, saying “Someone left this behind,” before driving off. Upon opening the backpack to look for information about the owner, the student discovered a treasure trove of valuable items.
Inside the backpack, the student found a laptop and a collection of jewelry including a custom-made diamond pendant, several Rolex watches, loose diamonds, as well as other jewelry and cash, estimated to be worth over $100,000.
After seeking advice from his mother, the student contacted the private security organization “Shmira” based in Brooklyn. Volunteers from Shmira quickly took charge of the backpack and initiated an investigation, eventually locating the rightful owner through the contact information found inside. The owner, who works in the Diamond District of New York City, chose not to disclose further details.
Upon verifying the owner’s identity, Shmira invited the owner to their office in Borough Park, Brooklyn, to reclaim the lost items. When the owner arrived, expecting the worst, he was astounded to find all his valuable possessions untouched inside the backpack.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, the owner offered a reward to the student as a token of appreciation, which was gracefully declined. This act of honesty and kindness exhibited by the student in returning the lost backpack with its precious contents intact has left both the owner and the community in awe of his integrity and selflessness.
