In order to celebrate a special Colombian festival dedicated to uniting friends and lovers, 47-year-old Maribel Yepes and her five friends teamed up to play a prank on their husbands.
Every year on the third Saturday of September, Colombians celebrate their annual Day of Love and Friendship. It’s a time for families across the country to come together and honor the value of enduring friendships.
In a special apartment in Medellin, Colombia, the celebration of this festival took a slightly different, yet love-filled and laughter-infused, turn.
Maribel is grateful to live near friends in Medellin, where she works as a welfare consultant and is a mother of two. All of Maribel’s friends are over 60 years old, a testament to her belief that age is not a barrier to having fun.
Four years ago, Maribel met these friends for the first time at her husband’s 40th high school reunion. Today, they often get together to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and reunions.
Earlier this year, Maribel noticed the popular “T-shirt prank” trending on social media. The prank involved wives secretly coordinating to buy matching T-shirts for their husbands and having the men unknowingly wear the coordinated shirts to gatherings.
Maribel and her friends thought it would be fun to organize such an event for their husbands on the Day of Love and Friendship, so they ordered identical shirts online. After the shirts arrived at Maribel’s workplace, her friends took them away for a week. Then, on September 21st – the Day of Love and Friendship – the big reveal happened.
Maribel invited her friends and their husbands to her apartment to celebrate the festival, but only the wives knew the surprise in store.
“Each of them was responsible for giving their husband a shirt on that day as a gift of love and friendship,” said Maribel, who has been married for 23 years.
Maribel’s husband, adorned in a bright orange shirt, opened the door for their first guests. He was surprised to find his friends dressed exactly like him. As Maribel watched and captured the moment, the men burst into laughter together.
When the next friend arrived, Maribel’s husband once again opened the door. He was astonished to see this friend also wearing the same shirt.
At this point, Maribel’s husband started to become a bit suspicious. Was this shirt really that popular, or had he unknowingly entered a secret fashion show? Only the men were dressed in matching shirts, while the wives were dressed normally.
As more husbands arrived, the laughter of wives continued to grow inside the apartment. The good-natured men eventually joined in on the fun, especially as the prank escalated with the fifth and sixth husbands’ arrivals.
“It was funny, but luckily they didn’t get upset. They had a great time, they had fun, and they didn’t mind wearing the same clothes,” Maribel said.
