In Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, a store sold milk priced at only 200 yuan (RMB, Renminbi) on an e-commerce platform for 6000 yuan, targeting specifically elderly customers. This news made it to the top trending searches on Baidu on April 7th.
According to news from The Paper on April 6th, the Zhengwo Dahuangsuimeng store in Mianyang City sold “Beida Huangniu Colostrum” for 6000 yuan, while the regular price on e-commerce platforms was only 200 yuan per box. The product was targeted at a large number of elderly people.
A resident of Mianyang City told the media that the company used false advertising and deception to lure many elderly people, including their grandparents, into purchasing expensive products. The company claimed that the “Beida Huangniu Colostrum” they were selling contained artificial protein, which was extremely beneficial for the body, and sold it at a high price of 6000 yuan per box. Following their recommended consumption method, one would need to spend about 500 yuan on milk weekly.
The resident believed that such high-priced sales tactics clearly raised suspicions of fraud. The company employed door-to-door sales and brainwashing-style propaganda to convince many elderly people of the “magical benefits” of their product, with some families losing amounts in the five digits due to being deceived. Although the company claimed to offer refunds, the elderly victims, having been brainwashed, were reluctant to believe there was any issue with the product.
Currently, the Zhengwo Dahuangsuimeng store is under investigation.
After the news was released, over two hundred netizens commented on Baidu. Many expressed anger towards the store’s exploitation of the elderly. A netizen, “coocoolco,” said: “The same thing happened to my elderly family members; their minds are affected, leading to dementia. That’s why these scammers are even more despicable!”
Other netizens revealed similar incidents occurring in other regions.
Netizen “zhzhwenwen” stated: “The same thing is happening in Zhengzhou, near Songshan Road and Jinshui River. They display regular supermarket products outside, while selling the cow colostrum in a small hut. They even collect used bags and boxes, probably to destroy evidence, targeting the elderly, conducting seminars all the time, regularly inviting the elderly for meals, and boldly declaring they are not afraid of investigations.”
Many netizens also pointed out that with their children not around them, the elderly are often lonely, and scammers prey on this vulnerability.
A Baidu user, 1787563, shared: “I drive for a ride-hailing service. At the end of last year, I picked up two elderly people in Mianyang, who were scammed for over 20,000 yuan by this Beida Huang cow colostrum. The elderly passengers told me they had spent over 20,000 that day. As we chatted, I realized they had been deceived. I advised them to report the incident, but they treated the salesperson like a child, saying if they are cheated, so be it. I was left speechless.”
