Since entering 2025, earthquakes have been occurring frequently in China. On January 25th, earthquakes struck consecutively in Kangding, Jingyan, and Mount Emei in Sichuan.
According to data from the China Earthquake Networks Center, at 10:17 PM on the 25th, Mount Emei City in Leshan, Sichuan experienced a 3.4 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 18 kilometers.
Earlier that day at 4:23 PM, Jingyan County in Leshan, Sichuan was hit by a 4.1 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 kilometers.
Several netizens in the comment section mentioned feeling tremors in Chongqing, Chengdu, Suining, Ya’an, and other areas.
At 1:30 PM on the 25th, Kangding City in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan experienced a 3.2 magnitude earthquake with a depth of 8 kilometers. The epicenter was located at 29.47 degrees north latitude, 101.88 degrees east longitude.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Center’s rapid report catalog, within a 200-kilometer radius of Kangding City over the past five years, there have been a total of 110 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3 or higher. The largest earthquake occurred on September 5, 2022, when a 6.8 magnitude quake hit Luding County in Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
Recent weeks have seen a spike in earthquake activity across China.
On the night of January 24th at 11:16 PM, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Nanao County in Shantou City, Guangdong, with a depth of 14 kilometers. The epicenter was located at 23.33 degrees north latitude, 117.45 degrees east longitude, approximately 27 kilometers from the coastline.
On January 20th, earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 3 hit Kuche City in Xinjiang, Zaduo County in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Dingjie County in Xigaze City, Tibet, and Hongyuan County in Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan, spanning across four provinces.
