Shocking discovery of over 40 dead cats near a technology park in Shanghai has sparked a heated discussion, making headlines and social media trends.
The incident took place near the Guorong·Pujiang Technology Park in Pujiang Town, Shanghai. According to the report by China Youth Daily·cn Youth Net, on March 25th, unpleasant odors were detected in the green belt next to the Friendship River outside the park. Several freshly buried mounds of soil and partially exposed cat corpses were found in the area.
Resident Zhang Jing, who lives in the technology park, stated that since November last year, she has found numerous cat corpses that appeared to have been abused in the green belt within the community and along the riverside path outside the community. She estimated there were at least over 40 dead cats.
Zhang mentioned that many residents in the community are aware of the cat abuse happening in the vicinity. Some residents claimed to have witnessed abused cat corpses as early as June last year. She described the escalating cruelty of the abuser, who at times hanged cats on the metal railing spikes of the community fence, likely thrown from a height. Residents were deeply disturbed upon witnessing such scenes.
Residents of the area have reported the incidents to the police on multiple occasions, with the most recent report being made in mid-March. Another resident living nearby, He Miao, who usually feeds stray cats, responded to the reports of animal abuse circulating on social media by visiting the site. She discovered several brutally killed cat bodies in varying stages of decomposition along the riverbank green belt.
Following the report of the incident, netizens have expressed their outrage online. Comments condemning the brutal acts and questioning the lack of action from authorities flooded social media platforms.
A police officer from the Du Xing Police Station in Pujiang Town confirmed that they had filed a case regarding the ongoing cat abuse incidents inside and outside the park since mid-March. However, he mentioned that investigating such cases poses challenges due to the remote location of the area. The officer explained that the process of gathering evidence through monitoring within the park and on the streets is time-consuming. Presently, there are no surveillance cameras installed along the riverbank, but there are plans to install monitoring devices in the area.
Interestingly, a similar incident was reported back on May 11, 2024, where a netizen raised concerns about a man poisoning cats through a cat feeding machine in Pujiang Town. The poisoning led to numerous stray cats displaying symptoms of poisoning. The man in question was taken in for questioning by the police. Later investigations revealed that the man did not poison the cats but poured car coolant into the cat feeding machine.
