Shanghai 17-year-old boy smokes in front of a bank, police report provokes criticism on the internet

Recently, a video of a “fully armed” man releasing smoke at a bank branch entrance has been circulating online. According to the person who filmed it, he said, “He bombed the ATM.”

The video shows a man holding a gun-like object, blatantly releasing smoke next to an ATM in a bank, with billowing white smoke emerging from the machine, and the sound of alarms echoing in the scene.

The filmer stated, “This guy is bombing the bank, he has a gun in his hand.”

According to an eyewitness at the scene speaking to Jiemu News, “Many people saw it, it was like an explosion of a big tire, a bang sound, creating something like a smoke bomb.”

Bank staff responded that upon inspection, the ATM was not damaged, there was no cash loss, the ATM was temporarily out of service, but the bank’s operations were running normally.

On February 17, the Pudong branch of Shanghai reported that the incident occurred around 8:30 pm on February 16, involving a 17-year-old male named Zhang who had purchased a smoke canister for playing CS game online and released it at the entrance of a bank branch on Zhouzhu Road, Luxi Road. The man was apprehended on the spot. His family stated that he had a history of mental illness and had not been taking medication on time recently. Currently, Zhang has been sent for psychiatric evaluation.

The incident has sparked heated discussions online. Many netizens said, “It’s difficult to withdraw money at the bank counter, how much money can there be in the ATM? Isn’t this foolish?” “The character Nezha they promote is perfect for rebelling against this sick society.” “Buddy, have you had too much to drink? You’re staggering even when walking.”

“I don’t believe it’s CS.” “A mentally ill person would usually go rob while draped in a sheet, why would they be fully armed at the bank entrance? And using professional weapons like a smoke canister.” “From the conduct of this behavior, it’s highly likely related to shooting games like Peacekeeper, Call of Duty, or Free Fire.”

Some netizens criticized, “It’s mental illness again…” “Mental illness is not a free pass to do whatever you want!”
