Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President JD Vance of the United States, is set to visit Greenland on Thursday, March 27th. This visit comes as President Trump hopes to secure this strategically important semi-autonomous territory from Denmark.
The White House issued a statement saying that the second lady of the United States, Usha Vance, will visit Greenland as part of an American delegation to explore historical sites, learn about the territory’s heritage, and attend the national dogsled race. The delegation is scheduled to return to the U.S. on March 29th.
According to a U.S. official who spoke to Reuters, White House National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright will visit a U.S. military base in Greenland as part of the trip. The White House has not yet responded to requests for comments.
Since returning to office on January 20th, Trump has consistently made the acquisition of Greenland by the U.S. a major topic of discussion. The strategic location and rich mineral resources of Greenland could benefit the U.S., as it lies on the shortest route from Europe to North America and is crucial for the U.S. ballistic missile early warning system.
Both the Greenland and Danish governments have expressed opposition to this move. Following the conclusion of elections on March 11th, Greenland is currently in a caretaker government phase, with a party supporting a gradual move towards independence from Denmark winning the election.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded to news of this visit in a written statement, stating, “This is something that we take very seriously.” She mentioned that Denmark is open to cooperation with the U.S., but any collaboration should be based on “fundamental rules of sovereignty.”
She added that discussions with the U.S. regarding Greenland will be conducted under close coordination between the Danish government and the future Greenlandic government.
