School in Guizhou Violates Regulations by Overenrolling, 2400 Students at Risk of Dropping Out Sparking Protests

Recently, the Guizhou Guiyang Economic and Technological School expanded its enrollment by admitting over 3000 students despite having only 600 available spots, putting more than 2400 students at risk of being unable to continue their education. This decision sparked protests from a large number of students and parents at the school, leading to the intervention of the Chinese military police for “stability maintenance.”

According to a report from Du Te News on the 29th, several netizens have posted videos claiming that the Guiyang Economic and Technological School knowingly accepted more than 3000 students when they were aware of the limited capacity of 600 spots. As a result, 2400 individuals have their academic records in other schools, and their graduation certificates are issued by those other institutions.

Under these videos, many parents and students shared their experiences and opinions.

One netizen, under the username “Heartless Greed,” expressed, “My child paid a deposit of 500 yuan and hasn’t received a refund yet”; another user named “Sea” mentioned, “Refunds were issued yesterday, is anyone planning to join in contacting the school?”; “Regret Missing” commented, “On the last day of military training, the school said they would transfer these 2400 students to other schools”; and another user with the handle “I Start Early at Eight” stated, “If your academic records are sold to another school, would you consider it as ‘selling academic records’?”

Information provided by netizens revealed that Guiyang Economic and Technological school issued a notice to students and parents regarding the professional diversion process. Students majoring in elderly services and management, e-commerce, urban rail transportation services, and other fields at the Guiyang Economic and Technological School will be redirected to other schools in accordance with professional alignment, with the fees remaining unchanged and teachers following the students. The diversion process started on July 27th. Additionally, students majoring in e-commerce will be transferred to the Guizhou City Technical School.

In response to the online controversy, the Guiyang Economic and Technological School recently released a statement denying the rumors of lacking educational qualifications and student academic records. However, the school did not address the issue of exceeding the enrollment quota.

As reported by Southern Web, the Guiyang Education Bureau announced on July 28th that, following a preliminary investigation, the Guiyang Economic and Technological School conducted irregular enrollment practices by exceeding permitted quotas and plans through third-party agencies, potentially engaging in false enrollment and promises of admission.

Public information indicates that the Guiyang Economic and Technological School is a provincial-level key vocational school established with approval from the Guizhou Provincial Department of Education and Guiyang Municipal Education Bureau. Its scope of operation includes vocational education and non-degree training. The school offers various majors such as early childhood education, biotechnology pharmaceuticals, and e-commerce, with a total student population exceeding 3000 individuals.

Reports disclosed that the Guiyang Economic and Technological School, according to the 2024 enrollment plan issued by the Department of Education, was only supposed to admit 600 students. However, the school exceeded this number without authorization. As a result, the academic records of the oversubscribed students could not be registered, leading the school to attempt to transfer these students to other institutions, triggering dissatisfaction and complaints from students and parents.

Based on circulated images and videos, a large group of students and parents protested inside the Guiyang Economic and Technological School, with the principal having fled. The vice principal who remained admitted personally that the school had only 600 available spots and asked the excess students to transfer. This request led to the vice principal being physically assaulted by students. Currently, a significant number of military police are on the scene for “stability maintenance.”
