Poll Shows Detrioration of Scams and Drug Problems, Taiwanese Police Bureau Responds

In response to the Taiwan National Parliament think tank’s release of the Taiwan 10-year satisfaction survey, it showed a serious problem with fraud. The Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Republic of China explained that the results of the survey and the issues raised in various public safety surveys would all be considered in public security policy.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Republic of China issued a press release on the 24th, stating that public safety is a long-term work, and the police attaches great importance to the subjective sense of public security by the people. They addressed the results of the “public security, fraud, drug” survey conducted by the new national parliament think tank. Regarding the overall public safety in the country, a survey conducted by the National Chung Cheng University in February 2023 showed that the public satisfaction with “home security” reached 88.8%. According to the survey data collected by the Police Administration, the satisfaction rate of the overall public security situation in residential communities has been maintained at over 90% for the past three years.

Moreover, the global database website Numbeo recently released the 2024 global “Safety” index rankings, with Taiwan ranking 4th out of 146 countries, indicating that Taiwan’s public security situation is relatively stable and good. The recent survey results by the new national parliament think tank indicated that the public perceives an exacerbation of issues related to “fraud” and “drugs”, which are similar to security problems faced by many countries around the world. In terms of fraud crimes, the Criminal Investigation Bureau implemented the “165 Anti-fraud Dashboard” from August 30th, which daily discloses the number of fraud cases handled by the police and the financial losses, raising public awareness of fraud risks and fostering anti-fraud consciousness.

Furthermore, by continuously revising the “New Generation Fraud Combat Strategy Action Plan,” enacting (amending) four new fraud laws and related sub-laws, and up to now, a total of 17,084 cases have been prevented, with a total of over NT$11.7 billion in prevented funds; 2,302 fraud groups have been cracked down, with 27,06 offenders apprehended, and illegal gains worth over NT$13.8 billion seized.

Regarding drug crimes, the Criminal Investigation Bureau pointed out that since the implementation of the “New Generation Anti-Drug Strategy Action Plan” in 2017, the total number of drug users and new drug users has shown a decreasing trend, indicating effective drug prevention. Furthermore, according to a public opinion survey conducted by National Chung Cheng University, 63.49% of the public are satisfied with the results of drug crackdown efforts.

Furthermore, the recent issue of abuse related to methamphetamine (zombie bombs), which has had domestic and international impact, was rigorously cracked down on by the police during the summer vacation this year even before being classified as a drug; after being classified as a third-class drug, multiple waves of crackdown operations were carried out, resulting in over 3,000 inspections, seizure of 17,540 pills, 317 kilograms of drug oil and powder, effectively stopping the harm.

Moreover, the Executive Yuan officially upgraded methamphetamine to a second-class drug on November 27 to prevent misuse by the public. The Criminal Investigation Bureau pointed out that crime is always finding new ways, and with social development, there will inevitably be changes in the nature and types of crimes, leading to different security challenges. The Police Administration continues to actively respond, endeavoring to maintain social order, collaborating with the public and private sectors to effectively combat through policies and legislation, and staying strong in execution without retreat.
