The Pentagon announced that it will launch an investigation into the leaking of national security information and plans to use lie detector tests on Department of Defense employees as part of the investigation.
On Friday, Joe Kasper, chief of staff to US Secretary of Defense Hagsees, released a memo on the Department of Defense website stating that the Pentagon’s intelligence and law enforcement departments are investigating the “recent unauthorized disclosure” of national security information, without providing details on the suspected leak.
Kasper stated in the memo that the recently unauthorized disclosure of national security information involved sensitive communications with key figures within the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), necessitating an “immediate, thorough investigation.”
“Polygraph examinations will be utilized in the course of conducting this investigation in accordance with applicable laws and policies,” Kasper said. “This investigation is underway and will ultimately report to the Secretary of Defense.”
He also mentioned that the report will include a complete record of unauthorized disclosures of information within the Department of Defense, as well as recommendations for improving such processes. If the investigation uncovers information on the leaker, it will be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agencies for criminal prosecution.
The Pentagon is the latest federal government agency to announce the use of lie detector tests on employees. Previously, there were reports that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem instructed the use of lie detector tests to assist in investigating leaks to the media. Earlier this month, Noem stated that Homeland Security would continue this practice. She expressed her belief that there are leakers within the government who should be held accountable.
“We have identified two information leakers within Homeland Security who have been consistently disclosing our operational information to the public, endangering the safety of law enforcement officers. We plan to prosecute these two individuals and hold them accountable,” Noem said in a video posted on the social media platform X earlier this month.
The US Department of Justice announced on Friday that an investigation has been initiated into the selective disclosure of “inaccurate but still classified information” concerning the Venezuelan gang “Tren de Aragua,” which reportedly has become a target for expulsion by the Trump administration.
