New York City police department is preparing to establish a satellite office for the 109th precinct. On October 27th, State Assemblyman Ron Kim, along with State Senator John Liu and Peter Tu, the chief advisor of the Flushing Chinese Business Association, visited the 109th precinct to express their support and gratitude for the police.
According to police sources, the planned satellite office will deploy 66 police officers. With the additional manpower, patrol routes will cover the downtown Flushing, university areas, Bayside, and parts of Whitestone.
Assemblyman Ron Kim expressed his appreciation for the city government and police department for responding to the community’s needs by increasing resources to improve public safety. He hopes that the 109th precinct will continue to add manpower, and he will propose a bill to allocate funds for establishing another precinct.
Flushing is the fourth largest central business district in New York City, serving as a major commercial and retail hub. The intersection of Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue in Flushing is the third busiest intersection in New York City, after Times Square and Herald Square, attracting hundreds of thousands of pedestrians daily.
The 109th precinct’s jurisdiction includes Flushing, Murray Hill, the university area, Bayside, and Whitestone, with the northern areas encompassing the university district, Bayside, and Whitestone. In addition to ensuring the safety of the bustling Flushing center, the precinct is responsible for the security of around 300,000 residents in the surrounding areas.
Being the second-largest precinct in the city in terms of area, the 109th precinct saw an 80% increase in crime rates after the pandemic, placing it at the top for crime incidents in the city. The establishment of the satellite office, equipped with 66 police officers, will provide unprecedented public safety services for Flushing and neighboring communities, covering parts of Whitestone, the university area, and Bayside. This move will enable quicker police response times while allowing the 109th precinct to focus more on the Flushing center and Greater Flushing.
Recently, Ron Kim allocated $35,000 to the New York Public Safety Patrol (PSP) to increase community volunteers for patrols. These patrol team members can assist police in protecting small businesses, combating retail theft, and aiding seniors and families.
