New York State Public Service Commission announced on Thursday (13th) that the neighborhoods of the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the northern part of Manhattan’s Marble Hill area will be assigned a new area code 465 to meet the growing demand for telephone numbers.
Currently, New York City has seven area codes. The new 465 area code will be used in conjunction with the existing 347, 718, 917, and 929 area codes, and will be assigned once the existing number resources are exhausted, applicable to all new residential, commercial, and wireless phone numbers.
It is anticipated that the telephone number resources for the existing four area codes will be depleted by the end of 2026, while the 465 area code will be able to provide phone numbers needed for approximately 11 years.
465 will be the eighth area code for New York City. The earliest original area code was 212, introduced in 1947 and was only used in Manhattan.
For the areas where the new area code will be activated, existing user numbers will remain unchanged, and only new applicants for telephone numbers, whether businesses or individuals, will be assigned numbers starting with 465.
