New Jersey has the highest out-migration rate in the country, with New York ranking third.

According to a recent report released by the interstate long-distance moving company “United Van Lines,” in 2024, New Jersey ranked first and New York ranked third in terms of states with the highest population outflow.

The report revealed that on January 1st, a new study indicated that in 2024, New Jersey had the highest population outflow rate in the nation, with New York ranking third.

On January 1st, the “United Van Lines” unveiled its 48th Annual National Migration Report, showing that New Jersey led the nation for the seventh consecutive year with a 67% outflow rate. The main reasons for people moving were retirement (22%) and a desire to be closer to family (20%). Over 40% of movers from the state were aged 65 and above, with 20% relocating to Florida.

The states with the highest population outflow in 2024 were ranked as follows: New Jersey, Illinois, New York, California, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Wyoming, Mississippi, and Nebraska.

In contrast, the Southeastern states saw an increase in incoming population, with Wilmington, North Carolina, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Little Rock, Arkansas, being identified as metropolitan areas attracting the most new residents.

The research also pointed out that many Americans are choosing to move closer to family, with affordability and lifestyle being significant factors in people’s relocation decisions.
