In a “calamity from the skies” incident, a large ice block fell from above and smashed through the metal roof of a residential house in central Florida, United States. Fortunately, this event did not result in any casualties. Authorities are currently investigating the origin of the ice block.
The Palm Coast Fire Department in Florida received a report on February 3rd that a massive ice block had crashed through the metal roof of a residential house, leaving shattered ice scattered on the ground. Palm Coast is a city in Flagler County with a population of over 70,000 people.
Upon arrival, the firefighters discovered a hole in the metal roof with remnants of ice inside the house. They promptly informed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Building Department of Palm Coast.
After inspection, the Building Department deemed the house safe for habitation. Firefighters placed a blue waterproof tarp on the damaged roof to protect the structure. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
According to a report by WOFL TV station, a local resident named Mike Bishop living nearby stated that he heard a loud noise during the incident. He could hardly believe it, as it was the first time in his life he had ever heard such a sound.
Joseph Bober from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office mentioned that firefighters had removed most of the ice from the roof hole and covered it with waterproof material.
As the Fire Department could not ascertain the origin of the ice block, they contacted the FAA for assistance in the investigation.
Aviation expert Shem Malmquist stated that while such events are rare, they occur more frequently than expected. The FAA spokesperson explained that water leakage on the exterior of an aircraft could freeze, and as temperatures rise during descent, the ice could melt and fall off.
The spokesperson added, “When the FAA receives reports of such incidents, they try to determine if the ice came from an aircraft and then identify the possibly involved aircraft.”
Similar events occurred in California in 2023, as previously reported by Epoch Times. On the morning of August 8, 2023, a resident named Jon LeClair in Big Bear City, California, had his roof pierced by a massive ice block that landed in the attic room.
LeClair mentioned that while working outdoors near his truck, he heard a tremendous noise. Upon inspection, he discovered a 24-inch (61 cm) diameter hole in his roof and a nearly bowling-ball-sized ice block in the attic room.
Initially, he thought it might have been a small meteorite but later considered it more likely to have fallen from an aircraft passing overhead.
