On February 20th, the Vice President of the Republic of China, Ms. Xiao Meiqin, met with the President of the “Japan-Taiwan Friendship Association,” Mr. Wato Masaro, and the Liberal Democratic Party caucus of Oita Prefecture. She expressed her hope for closer and friendlier Taiwan-Japan relations in the future.
In her speech, Vice President Xiao Meiqin expressed special thanks to President Wato for his long-term attention and support to the Taiwan-Japan relationship during his tenure as a member of the parliament and as the President of the “Japan-Taiwan Friendship Association.”
Xiao Meiqin pointed out that Taiwan and Japan have a close and friendly relationship in terms of economy, trade, as well as in the shared values of democracy and freedom. Local councillors from Oita Prefecture have also been actively involved in local cultural and tourism activities, deepening exchanges between Taiwan and Japan in various aspects.
She emphasized that the friendship between Taiwan and Japan is not only evident in everyday interactions but also shines through in times of adversity, such as facing challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, typhoons, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. People from both sides show care and support for each other, showcasing the strong and close ties between Taiwan and Japan.
“In recent years, Kyushu in Japan has become an important base for economic cooperation and exchanges between Taiwan and Japan due to investments from TSMC and partner companies. In the past, I have visited Oita Prefecture as a legislator to participate in the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Union (APPU) and was deeply impressed by the local cuisine, scenery, and hot springs,” said Xiao Meiqin.
She also expressed that it’s not just her, but many people in Taiwan love Japan and hope to have more Japanese friends visit Taiwan. Through mutual exchanges and interactions, she hopes to further strengthen the relationship between the two sides.
