“Mark Space-Time: Missiles too expensive to shoot down drones, Navy turns to new interceptor”

This summer, the US Navy plans to experimentally deploy two Army anti-drone systems on Navy ships. Over the past 15 months, in confrontations with the Houthi armed forces, they have fired over 200 missiles and hundreds of shells, each standard missile costing around $2 million USD, making the cost quite high.

The US Navy plans to experimentally deploy the Coyote drone and the Pouncer M anti-drone interception system on escort destroyers in the Ford-class carrier strike group. Both of these systems are jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle interceptors used by the US Army and have already been widely validated on land.

European countries tend to rely more on small-caliber rapid-fire guns to intercept drones, which have shorter interception ranges and are only suitable for point defense. In contrast, the US Army focuses on a multi-layered defense, ranging from jet interceptors with the longest range, to guided rockets, then to rapid-fire guns with the shortest range, along with electronic countermeasures and the testing of laser weapons, forming a defense network against drones from far to near.

The Coyote anti-drone system is a loitering munition developed by Raytheon. This compact drone can be launched from vehicles, ships, or helicopters. It can be used not only as a loitering munition to strike enemy targets but also to intercept drones, making it versatile in its applications.

The Pouncer M is an intelligent air defense drone system capable of vertical takeoff and landing. It boasts high supersonic speed, extreme maneuverability, modular effective payload, and continuous software upgrade capability. It can carry out ground attack missions, target incoming missiles, shells, drones, helicopters, fighter jets, and intercept them effectively.
