In 2024, the Russian forces have gained control of over 2500 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, with a significant portion taken in November alone amounting to 600 square kilometers, mainly in the eastern region of Luhansk in Ukraine. This pace, although much faster than in 2023, would still take more than a decade to completely occupy Luhansk at this rate. Of course, the Russian military has also suffered significant losses, with heavy casualties among armored vehicles and soldiers. The stockpile of armored vehicles and tanks from the former Soviet Union has been almost depleted, and the personnel losses may exceed 700,000. As a result, in 2024, the Russian forces have deployed at least an additional 100,000 troops in the Ukrainian battlefield. Furthermore, the use of heavy gliding bombs introduced by the Russian forces in 2024 has proven to be significant, with a peak usage of 3,000 gliding bombs per month, offsetting the shortage of artillery shells to some extent.
One of Russia’s greatest achievements in 2024 is the substantial support received from North Korea, providing a massive supply of shells, rockets, ballistic missiles, and direct engagement support from tens of thousands of North Korean soldiers.
For Ukraine, 2024 has been a challenging year. On February 8th, Ukrainian President Zelensky replaced the Ukrainian Army’s Supreme Commander with Hilske. Faced with the overwhelming manpower tactics of the Russian forces, the Ukrainian Army adopted a strategy of fighting and retreating, avoiding direct confrontation with the Russian forces. Due to the extensive use of heavy gliding bombs by the Russian forces, the Ukrainian Army was unable to effectively counteract, resulting in heavy losses among frontline personnel and continuous retreats along the eastern front.
By August 7th, Ukraine unexpectedly launched an offensive, entering Russian territory and within two to three weeks, occupying thousands of square kilometers of land in Kursk. The Russian forces mobilized troops from regions outside of eastern Ukraine, combined with tens of thousands of North Korean soldiers, amassing a force of 50,000 to oust the Ukrainian Army from Russian territory. After over four months of fighting, although they have regained half of the occupied areas, there is still a considerable distance to completely drive out the Ukrainian forces. However, after the Ukrainian Army invaded Kursk, the Russian forces did not give up their offensive on the eastern front, subsequently capturing the strategic towns of Avdivka and Vuledar. Meanwhile, the Russian forces continued to intensively attack another strategic location in Luhansk, the village of Red Army, also known as Pokrovsk. On Christmas Eve, the Russian forces attempted a sneak attack by crossing the river in the south but were repelled by the Ukrainian forces.
