Myanmar Earthquake Causes Devastation in Mandalay, with Multiple Buildings Collapsing, including Sky Villa Apartment Complex where Many Chinese People are Trapped.
One of the hardest-hit areas in the devastating earthquake in Mandalay, Myanmar is the Mandalay region, where a large number of houses have collapsed, and three locations with buried Chinese individuals have been identified. Among them, one residential area has the highest number of people buried. Due to the temperature exceeding 40℃, the bodies under the rubble have already started to decompose, emitting a foul odor. The high temperature is affecting the progress of rescue operations, with rescuers needing to frequently replenish with ice water.
The strong earthquake on the afternoon of March 28 caused extensive damage to buildings in Mandalay Province, with the collapse of an 11-story apartment building, “Sky Villa,” in the capital, Wacheng. Many people were trapped. Within the Chinese community in Myanmar, Mandalay City is often referred to as “Wacheng.”
According to a report from the Xiao Xiang Morning News on March 30, Contact was made with Jenny, a volunteer at the Sky Villa Apartment in Wacheng.
Jenny stated that the Sky Villa Apartment suffered severe damage in the earthquake, and two days have passed since the earthquake, causing the buried bodies to begin to decompose. The apartment houses hundreds of Chinese residents.
She explained that due to the temperature in Wacheng exceeding 40°C, the bodies buried under the rubble have begun to emit a strong rotten smell. Rescue workers are unable to carry out their work normally and are in need of ice water. On the afternoon of March 30, ice donated by a local Chinese company arrived at the donation site of Sky Villa. In addition, some mineral water and fruits were also delivered here.
Li Jianjun, Secretary-General of the Myanmar Hunan Chamber of Commerce in Mandalay, stated that currently, “over a hundred houses have collapsed in Mandalay, and there are three confirmed locations where Chinese nationals are buried.”
One of these locations is the Sky Villa residential area. “The area with the most buried people is this residential complex. What used to be 11 floors is now just 6, with the bottom 5 floors stacked on top of each other. The situation is quite serious. It is said that when the buildings collapsed in the complex, someone heard cries for help in Chinese, indicating that Chinese nationals may be buried.”
