A major sewage leak occurred in Port Jefferson on the north shore of Long Island, New York this past Monday morning, April 14th. Approximately 30,000 gallons of partially treated sewage flowed into the harbor, causing the water to appear greenish in color. The Long Island Health Department has urged local residents to avoid approaching the affected water areas temporarily to prevent potential health risks.
According to news12, the incident originated from a power failure at the sewage treatment plant in Port Jefferson, resulting in the continuous discharge of untreated sewage for about two hours. Following the accident, local residents reported that the entire water area outside Port Jefferson had turned green.
Gregson Pigott, Director of the Suffolk County Health Department, stated in a release, “Out of an abundance of caution, we remind individuals planning to fish, boat, or engage in other recreational activities near the water to take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and their families from potential pathogens.”
Restrictions have been imposed on shellfish harvesting activities in the area, with authorities cautioning parents to prevent children and pets from coming into contact with contaminated water bodies. In case of accidental exposure, individuals are advised to immediately rinse their bodies thoroughly with clean water.
The Port Jefferson Village government has also issued a warning, stating that individuals experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin or eye irritation, sore throat, allergic reactions, or difficulty breathing should seek medical attention promptly.
The affected water areas are expected to remain closed until 9 a.m. on Wednesday, pending further assessment of water quality.
