January 6th, the mainland Chinese actor Lu Han’s three major social media accounts were all set to “prohibit following” on multiple platforms, including Weibo, Xiaohongshu, and Douyin. The follow button on all platforms was on strike, with the platforms explicitly stating the reason as “the user violates laws and regulations.” This news quickly became the number one trending topic. Subsequently, Lu Han’s studio Weibo account issued an apology statement.
A viral video circulating online showed Lu Han exhibiting behavior such as cursing and making inappropriate gestures during a livestream on a social media platform. The video sparked discussions and controversies.
According to Chinese media reports, Lu Han is currently recording the variety show “Happy Camp,” with co-stars including Deng Chao, Chen He, and Wang Mian.
Currently, Lu Han’s studio account is showing normal status. He issued a signed apology statement through the studio account, stating, “I apologize earnestly for setting a bad example during the livestream and I am willing to actively mitigate the negative social impact caused by it.” He also expressed his willingness to “take on the social responsibility that an actor should bear” and to “impose stricter requirements on himself.”
On the 6th, Lu Han’s Weibo (63.44 million followers), Douyin (11.19 million followers), and Xiaohongshu (257,000 followers) accounts were all set to prohibit following. Weibo displayed the reason as “prohibited from following due to violation of laws or the Weibo Community Convention”; Xiaohongshu indicated that Lu Han was “prohibited from following for violating the community guidelines”; while Douyin did not specify the reason but also showed “the user is prohibited from following.”
As previously reported, in the early hours of November 29th last year, Lu Han engaged in verbal confrontations with viewers during a live broadcast while under the influence of alcohol, even resorting to using vulgar language, leading some netizens to question his mental state. Some speculate that Lu Han’s three major social media accounts being prohibited from following may be a response to these series of chaotic behaviors that have angered the authorities. Others suggest that since this incident happened a while ago, it is unlikely to be a sudden wakeup call, hinting at the possibility of a more serious event. Lu Han’s Weibo last update was on January 5th at 10 a.m.
Subsequently, Lu Han’s studio issued another statement: “Since Lu Han released the apology statement, we have noticed that there are some malicious individuals on the internet who fabricate and spread false information, malicious rumors, and defamation against Mr. Lu Han. We warn these individuals to immediately cease their infringement behaviors and mitigate the impact.” They mention considering legal action against those who persist in wrongdoing and will synchronously collect evidence through legal means.
Lu Han, born in Beijing in 1990, graduated from Seoul Institute of the Arts in South Korea. While studying in Korea in 2008, he was scouted by SM Entertainment as a trainee.
