On January 25, 2025, the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, had a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China expressed appreciation for Rubio’s first interaction with the Chinese Foreign Minister, where the US side conveyed serious concerns about China’s ongoing coercion of Taiwan and expressed affirmation and welcome.

The Republic of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release stating that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China, spoke on January 24 Eastern Time, highlighting the United States’ commitment to regional allies and serious concerns about China’s coercion towards Taiwan and actions in the South China Sea.

Regarding Secretary of State Rubio’s first interaction with the Chinese Foreign Minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China affirmed and welcomed the US side’s serious concerns about China’s continuous coercion of Taiwan and China’s aggressive military expansion and actions that destabilize regional peace and stability.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China also noted, “The Chinese side has once again made various distorted remarks about Taiwan in the press release of this call. We once again solemnly emphasize that our country and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other, which has been an objective fact for a long time and is the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China looks forward to further strengthening cooperation with the Trump administration on a solid and friendly basis in Taiwan-US relations. They aim to continue demonstrating the determination of self-defense by enhancing Taiwan’s defense capabilities and resilience comprehensively through avenues such as arms procurement from the US, defense reforms, and strengthening the overall societal defense resilience. Moreover, they seek to deepen the close security and economic partnership between Taiwan and the US, jointly promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the region.
