Ngala Private Game Reserve, located in the famous Kruger National Park in South Africa, is one of the well-known wildlife conservation areas. A guide in the area witnessed a tragic scene where a buffalo attempted to slip away from a lion pride but was eventually hunted down.
According to the Latest Sightings website, guide Roan du Plessis had been tracking a pride of lions called Birmingham when he happened to see a lone buffalo near a waterhole become the prey of these lions.
The lions in this pride all seemed to be lionesses, who typically hunt together in groups. They watched the buffalo in the waterhole and waited on the shore, clearly targeting it as their prey.
Despite being aware of the lion pride’s presence, the buffalo still tried to evade them, thinking the best way was to sneak past them, but it was to no avail.
After the buffalo came ashore, the lions immediately followed. Despite the buffalo running off, it was eventually brought down by the lions, including two rare white lions.
Du Plessis said, “We rushed toward where the commotion was happening and found these lions pouncing on the buffalo.”
He mentioned that as the lions were trying to suffocate the buffalo, a group of other buffaloes came back to try to drive the lions away. Only one old lioness didn’t back down, continuing to hold onto the nose of the buffalo brought down by them.
He noted that after a confrontation, the lion pride ultimately reclaimed the buffalo, while other lions managed to drive away the buffaloes that came to rescue. The lions even fought amongst themselves for the best position to eat the buffalo.
He said, “At that time, 23 lions were eating one buffalo, so it lasted until the afternoon.”
He also said that he would never forget this sighting, not only because of the large number of lions in this pride, but also because there have only been three recorded wild white lions in the world to date, with two appearing in this unforgettable hunting scene.
