On Tuesday afternoon at 3 PM Eastern Time (January 28), the newly appointed United States Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, delivered her vision for the Department of Homeland Security to all employees at the department’s headquarters. New Tang Dynasty TV and Epoch Times conducted a live online broadcast with real-time translated subtitles.
Noem was confirmed as the Secretary of Homeland Security last Saturday (January 25) by the U.S. Senate with a vote of 59 in favor and 34 against.
During her confirmation hearing, Noem stated that combating illegal immigration and enhancing border security will be her two main priorities in office.
On Monday (January 27), the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency reported a total of 1179 arrests nationwide, with 853 detentions made.
Prior to her role as Secretary, Kristi Noem served as the Governor of South Dakota. After winning the election last year, former President Trump mentioned in his nomination statement that Noem was the first governor to deploy National Guard troops to assist Texas in combating the “border crisis,” and she did so a total of eight times.
Trump also stated, “She will work closely with ‘border czar’ Tom Homan to achieve border security and ensure the safety of our American homeland from encroachment by our adversaries.”
The Department of Homeland Security has a wide range of responsibilities, including border security, counterterrorism, and cybersecurity, overseeing agencies such as U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the U.S. Secret Service. The Coast Guard also falls under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime.
