April 5th marked the United Nations International Day of Conscience, and Icelandic democracy advocate Zhou Feng stood in front of the Chinese Embassy to show his support for all the conscience prisoners persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Zhou Feng, who resides in Iceland, expressed to a reporter from Epoch Times, “For decades, the CCP, through oppression, surveillance, and violence, has deprived countless individuals of their basic human rights. Whether it is the Uighurs in Xinjiang, pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, or human rights lawyers and conscience prisoners in China, they have all suffered under the brutal persecution by the CCP.”
Conscience prisoners refer to individuals who have been deprived of personal freedom due to peacefully exercising or defending human rights, leading to their detention, imprisonment, or enforced disappearance.
The conditions of political and conscience prisoners are crucial indicators of a country’s human rights situation. According to a report published by a rights monitoring site on March 31, titled “Monthly Report on Political and Conscience Prisoners Detained in Mainland China,” there are currently 1,712 political and conscience prisoners from diverse ethnic groups in China. This includes 11 individuals under a suspended death sentence like Ming Jingguo and Ding Hanzhong, 18 serving life imprisonment including Wang Bingzhang and Doji Zhaxi, and a total of 1,447 serving fixed-term sentences like Zhang Haitao and Zhou Haiyan. There are also 236 individuals detained without sentencing, such as Peng Lifa and Zhang Zhan.
Zhou Feng stated, “The CCP not only enforces tyranny domestically but also monitors and threatens dissidents globally through institutions like embassies. Even on the free land of Iceland, we cannot overlook the infiltration and oppression by the CCP.”
“Iceland is a country that values freedom and independence, with a tradition of resisting injustice. Although Iceland established diplomatic relations with China in 1971, it does not mean we should turn a blind eye to the CCP’s atrocities. We protest against the CCP’s tyranny, against its trampling of human rights, against its threat to global democracy. The Chinese Embassy in Iceland, as a representative of the CCP, must hear our voices.”
Zhou Feng emphasized, “Today, we stand here to roar at the CCP: Stop the persecution, release all conscience prisoners, and give freedom back to the Chinese people!”
