Long Island – A man was arrested on September 11 after impersonating a Microsoft employee in an attempt to scam an elderly man out of his savings.
Around 10:30 a.m. on September 10 in East Meadow, Nassau County, an 82-year-old man received a message on his computer claiming to be from a Microsoft employee. The message stated that his bank account had been compromised and that he needed to withdraw all his savings and await further instructions on where to transfer the money. Realizing it was a scam, the elderly man immediately contacted the authorities.
After an investigation, Nassau County police arrested 26-year-old suspect Zongjin Teng on the afternoon of the 11th. Teng is charged with third-degree grand larceny and attempted third-degree grand larceny, and appeared in court on the 12th.
Several cases of Chinese men pretending to be Microsoft employees to commit fraud have been reported in Nassau County this year. Previously, Brooklyn man Yongkang Weng was arrested on April 1 for attempting to defraud a 57-year-old woman in Mineola out of $30,000. Additionally, Rong Chen from Queens and Zhensheng Yu from Nassau County were arrested on April 8 for allegedly scamming an 83-year-old man in Saddle Rock out of $31,000.
