On Wednesday, February 11, the House Committee on Homeland Security in the United States released the latest “China Threat Snapshot,” detailing over 60 espionage activities conducted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) within the United States over the past four years. These activities included transmitting sensitive military information, stealing trade secrets, engaging in cross-border suppression operations, and obstructing American judicial fairness.
The announcement from the National Security Committee stated that the broad threats posed by the CCP within the United States are rapidly expanding. The updated “snapshot” today shows that in the past four years, China’s (CCP) transnational suppression power has far exceeded its borders, vigorously opposing democracy, suppressing dissidents, monitoring the United States, and its intentions becoming more apparent.
The announcement pointed out, “The Trump administration is prepared to face this threat.”
Last month, during a confirmation hearing in the Senate, Secretary of State Marco Rubio listed the People’s Republic of China as the United States’ greatest geopolitical adversary. He stated, “Most of the work we need to do to counter China’s (CCP) actions is domestic.”
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem detailed the CCP’s “extremely dangerous” and powerful cyber espionage activities during the confirmation hearing. She emphasized that the CCP aggressively steals Americans’ private information, partly to have the opportunity to “control our critical infrastructure.”
Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Mark E. Green, stated, “Over the past four years, the CCP has made significant progress in information warfare within the United States. If you think the U.S. military and government are the only targets of the CCP, think again. Beijing’s malevolent influence is casting a shadow over American businesses, university campuses, and our vital infrastructure that we rely on, not to mention those who dare to speak out against the CCP on U.S. soil. Fortunately, the Trump administration has issued a warning to Beijing; the days of arbitrarily undermining our sovereignty are over.”
Chairman of the House Counterterrorism and Intelligence Subcommittee, Texas Republican Representative August Pfluger, said, “China is not just a distant geopolitical adversary; it is undermining American sovereignty in our own backyard. The level of CCP presence in our communities is alarming. In the chaos and weak enforcement of the previous administration, law enforcement agencies in my area arrested a ‘high-value target’ from China who illegally crossed the southwest border. Additionally, brave dissidents like Pastor Fu Xiqiu in Midland faced threats of elimination from CCP agents in their homes. Enough is enough! With strength back in the White House and Texas leading the way, Beijing’s malevolent influence will no longer be ignored.”
The announcement stated that from February 2021 to December 2024, more than 60 espionage cases related to China were recorded in 20 states across the United States. According to statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), around 80% of economic espionage charges benefit China, with approximately 60% of all cases of stealing trade secrets being related to China. The announcement noted that, “In fact, CCP’s theft of U.S. intellectual property leads to Americans losing an average of $6,000 per year after taxes, equivalent to a four-person household in the U.S.”
Recently, on December 18, 2024, a Chinese citizen living in New York City admitted to conspiring to act as an illegal agent for the People’s Republic of China, operating an undeclared overseas police station for China’s Ministry of Public Security in Lower Manhattan. In 2023, Chairman Green and Pfluger wrote to the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI requesting information regarding these secret “police stations.”
In 2024, the Counterterrorism and Intelligence Subcommittee heard testimony from Dr. Fu Xiqiu, a Chinese dissident and victim of the CCP’s transnational suppression. His testimony provided reference for three bipartisan bills introduced in the previous Congress to oppose the CCP’s cross-border suppression within the United States.
During the four years of the Biden administration, a large number of Chinese nationals illegally crossed the southwest border into the United States, surpassing any previous government. Border patrol agents apprehended over 64,000 Chinese individuals, more than the total from 2007 to 2020.
The House Committee on Homeland Security strongly criticized the Biden administration’s handling of undocumented Chinese immigrants and expressed optimism about the additional measures the Trump administration will take to eliminate Beijing’s influence.
