Hong Kong Singer Li Guoxiang Passes Away in Mainland China at the Age of 60

Renowned Hong Kong singer Li Guoxiang, who has been based in mainland China in recent years, passed away at the age of 60 in his residence in Guangzhou on March 29th. The news of his death was confirmed by his close friend, Hong Kong singer and songwriter Zhou Qisheng, who revealed on social media that Li Guoxiang had informed him a few months ago of health issues preventing him from attending Zhou’s concert in Guangzhou.

According to reports from Hong Kong media, two weeks ago Li Guoxiang posted a dark cloud animated image with the word “Bye” on a social media account he had not used in seven years. The post was accompanied by lyrics from his hit song “Unfinished Love” – “未讓這世界查覺,暗暗地記載” (not letting the world notice, secretly recording). At the time, the post did not gain much attention, but in hindsight, it seems to have hinted at his farewell to the world.

Li Guoxiang was born in 1964 and rose to fame after participating in Hong Kong’s 8th New Singers Singing Contest in 1989, where he won the “Singer’s Special Award.” In 1991, he officially debuted and won the Newcomer Gold Award at the Hong Kong Commercial Radio Awards, triumphing over stars like Aaron Kwok who won the Silver Award.

Some of Li Guoxiang’s most famous songs include “Night of Picking Stars,” “Unfinished Love,” “Blue Sha La La,” and “The Most Beautiful World = You + Me.” In 1993, his duet “Always Encouraging You” with Lun Wing-leung became a popular song. He later expanded his career to the Taiwan market and focused on producing Hi-Fi audiophile records. The Mandarin version of “Always Encouraging You” was sung by Nicky Wu as “Wish You All the Best.”

In recent years, Li Guoxiang had been active in the Guangdong region of China. In 2023, he became the artistic director for a media company in Guangzhou.

Li Guoxiang, who had rarely been seen in Hong Kong in recent years, was diagnosed with lung cancer in March last year. His manager, Mr. Weng, revealed in an interview with TVB Entertainment News that Li Guoxiang passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 13th. In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated in mainland China, and a private funeral was held discreetly. His ashes were brought back to Hong Kong on March 28th.

Regarding the wishes of friends to hold a memorial service for Li Guoxiang in Hong Kong, Mr. Weng stated that a decision would be made after consultation with his family.
