Hong Kong Cinema Day | $30 movie tickets on sale at noon today

The Hong Kong Theatres Association has once again introduced “Hong Kong Theatre Day,” with movie tickets priced at 30 Hong Kong dollars. The event is set to take place on April 21st, with ticket sales starting at noon on April 17th. Despite this promotion, our reporter found sparse crowds when visiting several cinemas around 1 p.m.

At around 1 p.m., it was observed that iSQUARE Emperor Cinemas in Tsim Sha Tsui had very few people, MCL Cheung Sha Wan Cinema had sparse foot traffic, and only a few individuals were seen purchasing tickets at Broadway B+ cinema in APM, Kwun Tong.

While attempting to purchase tickets online around 1 p.m., the reporter encountered relatively smooth processes on most cinema websites, with only Broadway’s page experiencing temporary delays.

The ticket discount is applicable at all commercial cinemas across Hong Kong, including ACX Cinemas @ North Point, Broadway Circuit, Emperor Cinemas, Movie Art Cinemas, Cinema City, CGV D2 Place, Emperor Cinemas, Golden Harvest Cinemas, Gala Cinema, Heritage Cinema, MCL Cinemas, China United Cinema, Newport Circuit, Sunbeam Theatre. It also applies to VIP cinemas but will not include dining services on the day of the event.

Movie tickets will be priced at a uniform 30 Hong Kong dollars on the day, excluding private screenings and special programs. If the concession price for seniors’ first screenings is below 30 dollars, it will remain unchanged. There will be no discounts for seniors, children, or students on the day, and all other cinema promotions and movie vouchers will not be valid.

Tickets will be made available for purchase gradually at cinema box offices and online ticketing websites after 12 p.m. on April 17th, with the ACX Cinema @ North Point box office opening at 2 p.m., and Heritage Cinema initiating pre-sales from April 20th. Each person can only buy a maximum of 4 tickets per transaction at cinema box offices.

In an afternoon statement, the Hong Kong Theatres Association expressed appreciation for the public support received for the event, noting that audiences queued both at cinema box offices and online ticketing websites, resulting in generally smooth operations.

Event ambassador Louis Cheung expressed his delight at the widespread support for Hong Kong Theatre Day, thanking everyone who queued early to purchase tickets. Some audience members shared their excitement for the event, mentioning their prepared movie lists and plans to watch family-friendly films with their loved ones.

Cheung stated, “I am thrilled to see so many citizens supporting Hong Kong Theatre Day. Thank you to everyone who lined up early at the cinemas to buy tickets. I hope audiences can enjoy different screening formats and experiences like VIP cinemas through this event and continue to support cinema-going in the future by watching more movies at theatres.”

Chairman of the Hong Kong Theatres Association, Victor Yuen, noted that this morning there were many families at the cinemas purchasing sets of 4 tickets, hoping to see a surge in foot traffic this Sunday for shopping, movie-going, and dining activities. Each cinema chain has prepared a diverse range of film selections for the event, including award-winning films from the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards, movies aligned with the popular culture festival theme “Cultural and Martial Arts” such as “Martial Arts and Action” and “Adaptations of Literary Works,” as well as family-friendly animations, aiming to make it an enjoyable Sunday for audiences with varying movie preferences.
