First-grade Girl in Fujian Distracted in Class, Gets Ear Pulled and Torn 2 Centimeters by Teacher

Recently, a first-grade girl at the Second Affiliated Primary School of Quanzhou Normal University in Fujian, China, had her ear twisted by her teacher during class for being distracted, resulting in a 2-centimeter tear. School officials responded by stating that the teacher involved has been temporarily suspended.

According to reports from mainland Chinese media, a netizen revealed that on April 22, during a Chinese language class of the first-grade class at the Second Affiliated Primary School of Quanzhou Normal University, the teacher got angry at a student for being distracted and forcefully twisted the student’s ear, causing a 2-centimeter tear on the right earlobe and back groove, with a 0.5-centimeter tear in the front. The student’s parents took her to the hospital where she received 5 stitches.

The school officials mentioned that the behavior of the teacher involved was inappropriate, resulting in their temporary suspension pending an investigation. The focus at the moment is on stabilizing the child’s condition and not ignoring the incident. Local education bureau officials stated that they are currently exploring appropriate measures, and the decision on whether the teacher in question will continue teaching will be based on the investigation results.

This incident has sparked attention on social media platforms.

Netizens commented, “The average attention span for children is estimated to be age multiplied by 3 or 5. For a first-grade student who is six years old, they can generally maintain attention for roughly half an hour. Many children cannot even reach this highest standard. It’s normal for kids to be distracted if a class session is too long… There are plenty of methods to help children improve their attention span that are more effective than twisting their ears. Resorting to physical punishment only reflects the teacher’s incompetence.”

“Is it really necessary to overreact for such a minor issue as being distracted? It would have been fine to just clap the hands a few times. I remember back in our time, if we weren’t attentive, the teacher would just make us stand up during the lesson.”

“The teacher’s actions were a bit excessive. It not only caused physical harm to the child but more importantly, the emotional damage will leave a lifelong impact. A teacher should maintain emotional stability. Imagine the psychological trauma inflicted on a first-grade student in this situation, not to mention the physical harm.”

These reactions from netizens highlight the concerns and considerations regarding disciplinary actions and the well-being of students in educational settings, emphasizing the importance of effective and compassionate teaching methods.
